more lumens the better?

I recommend 12,000 minimum. 2000 per plant.

IMO More is better, You need the lumens to get the light penetration when the plants are bigger. It also produces closer nodes and tighter nuggs.

I use 2 400 HPS , each is about 50,000 lumens. in a 2x6x7 foot closet.

Its all about space, if you got small plants you can do with less.
There is a formula for lighting, I believe its 2500 lumens per square foot.

thanks growdude : ) i cant wait to return this damn MH 250W bulb and RAW ballast to get a 250 HPS. my grow space is fairly small 20 inches by 14 inches so do you think 250hps will be enough?

20"x14" will you have room for the bulb? but that should be plenty of light.
Heat will be your problem in a space that small.

oh sorry lol thats the size of my hydro kit. i have plenty of room to grow in and enough room for the light. i will also have a fan in my closet, (closet is about 2ft by 9ft) my hydro kit is 20in by 14in

Wow, damn dude you weren't kidding when you sad you had a small grow area. Well, I think for a grow of that size you should look into CFLs to keep the heat down. How do you plan on venting that area?

Well there are options. If smell wasn't an issue then you could 1. just open your grow area up to let hot air escape or 2. just vent it out of the area with another fan. But if smell control is needed, then you may want to build/buy a carbon filter with a fan pulling air through the filter and out of the grow.

Well with my 2 400 watt HPS, I leave it open about 18" all day.
I have a box fan at the top blowin out and a ocsilating fan blowin in down low.
I want to keep it at 75 F so if the room starts to warm up and my temps raise ill open the window, its been 45F outside and ill leave the window open all day, whatever it takes to regulate temps, humidity.
