Im new to this whole growing stuff..
Ive only ever been was the end user.. cough cough.haha

Im planning to start a Hydroponic grow room.
But before I actually start. I want to ask you veterans your opinions.

As a noob, and amatuer green thumb wannabe.
would you advise to start with SOIL or Hydroponics??

Pros and Cons of either would be greatly appreciated.

thanks again.

Im new to this whole growing stuff..Start with soil. Just plant, water and watch. With hydro it's monitor , adjust, change, adjust a lil more. Way too complicated for a noob imo. Good luck either way.

I would advise you to start in dirt and while leaning the art of growing weed in it's simplest form, get this book and read it to learn about hydroponics. This book is considered the bible of hydro:

HYDROPONIC FOOD PRODUCTION
By: Dr. Howard Resh

Get the latest edition you can. I think #6 is the latest. You'll love this book! For someone trying to learn about hydroponics, it's the best thing in the world.

Good luck man.

Hydro hydro hydro!! I only say this... cuz as a noob... and even still now... I can't keep a plant alive for _____ (fill in blank) in soil.

Depends what kinda person you are really IMO.... hydro is ez to fix problems... but easy to mess up if u can't read and follow a feed schedule... soil is more forgiving... (well the pros like hick on here tell me that)

IME, there is more to dirt than with hydro. But, I could just make more work for myself by adding many amendments and feeding all sorts of weird organic matter. There are basics that must be learned either way you choose to go. If you don't already have one, pick up marijuana grow guide of some sort. There are many out there and many even available online.

Thanks for your replies..

but im still on the fence.

ive grown mj before.. but not seriously.
bag seed in a pot, on a window ledge.
couple actually grew kinda tall, but skinny and lanky.
One even grew some bulbs like that dropped pollen. ( guess it was a male)
I eventually got bored stop watering it and it died.

Since I found this forum (searching for turtle info), ive been reading
it non stop ever since.

Stoneybud,

I was planning the build a 1 grow chamger Ebb and flow, like the one
in your DIY section. got some questions. (sorry for not asking in your thread).

1. If i place my grow chamber on top of the resevoir. would you recommend
running the pump striaght up into the middle of the grow chamber from the
resevoir?? Or still plumb it out the side of the resevoir and to the middle of
the grow chamber.

2. Does it matter how many grow chambers I do?? As long as I double the
water capacity in the resevoir with the amount of water in the grow chamber
with the hydroton.

SOIL.....it's harder to mess it up than hydro and way less expensive to get started. plus if your power goes out you dont' lose whole crops...always a plus.

if you grow in a coco based soil and keep em healthy grow rates are comparable to hydro.

Have to say soil too, much more forgiving than hydro

Hydro is just so easy... and expensive? Just need a bloody bucket and a $10 air pump.

1. I wouldn't suggest putting it on top of the reservoir. You'll have to add nutrient solution almost every day and also be able to access the pump and be able to clean it out after a crop. It makes it hard to do if the grow chamber is on top of it. I would plumb it to the area to one of it's sides.

Remember that the floor of the grow chamber has to be at the level of the top of the reservoir.

2. No, it doesn't matter. You can have as many as you want. I'm going to use a 3 foot by 5 foot plastic tray that is used for oil drum overflow for my next room. Two or three of them. I'm plumbing a 55 gallon drum outside for my nutrients. The drum top will be at ground level. That way, my trays can be on the floor of my room.
