Light distance

Quick question is 9 in to close to keep my lights from the top of the plant? I've heard 12in .It's only a 250 hps. I'm moving up to a 400 hps for flowering. This is correct right? Only one plant. :)

If its hot on the back of your hand its to close. I have my 400 watt at 12 in though with no issues. Also if u have a fan on it you can get it even closer.

lets put it this way...
is there ventalation in your grow space?
is the heat from your light bulb to hot for your hand?
so basicly if you have good ventalation and the heat from your hps isnt to hot to burn your hand you should be okay, just test it like that, your the best judge....there may even be charts showing at what height your plants are in comparison to how far your light should hang....hope it helped

I use a 600w and just have a fan that blows the air between the tops of the plants and the light. I'm able to get the light within 9 inches with no problems.
