a buddy of mine told me if i use reptile fluorescent or salt water fluorescent with high reds and oranges that they work just as good as a hps. he said u get more UV rays which are better for the plant as far as taste and potency goes.

No way.

UV, (depending on the spectrum of UV), either does absolutely nothing for the plant in the best case, or actually harms the plant to the point of killing it in the worst case.

Do a "Google" on "Ultraviolet light+plants" and read the results. You'll find that you shouldn't use it.

As for Flo's, if you use the proper spectrum of Flo's, you can flower with them. They aren't as efficient as an HPS, but if that's all you have, they'll work.

dont even mess with flouros, if you have the space for an HID light, there are litteraly worth their weight...MH great for vegging as well as flours, easy, gives off great blue spectrum, cooler color. and last but not least for flowering, you would be amazed at the size of the buds in comparison with the different lights used.....its high presure sodium all the way....red spectrum lighting is essential for larger bud growth!!!!
