You want to use potting soil, not top soil. You want it to drain well, so unless you use fox farms or another good potting soil, you will want to add some perlite. You should be able to squeeze it in you hand and it should not pack together when you open your hand. Hope this helps and Merry Christmas to all.

I went to homedepot and bought two bags of organic seed starting mix and so far it's been doing great and it's pretty cheap around 5$ a 10L bag.
It's 100% organic and OMRI approved!
See what's OMRI - http://www.marijuanapassion.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19565 - Read the Hick's post.
Here's the picture of the bag. Top left corner is how the OMRI approved stamp looks like.

get the foxfarm potting soil- ocean forest, no need to add anything besides nutrients while growing. Dont mess around with your garden soil, you will find critters crawling all over your plants. check out my first grow, its in foxfarm.

Make sure theres no nutes in it and as long as it drains well, it should be okay. If not, add some perlite.

if you go to the hardware store they usually have big bails of soil, you want something with alotta peatmoss and some perilite. I recommend BF1 or sunshine mix, theyre very easy to find. and if you can get to a growstore than FoxFarm or Bcuzz offer beautiful soils. All shouldnt cost anymore than 40 bucks and itsalotta dirt.
