Here soon im going to be in the market for a new camera, but im having trouble deciding so im turning to my photo happy family here for some advice. Now what im already leaning toward is a hard drive camcorder that also does pics, BUT ive been told that the picture (still) quality is low when using these camcorders. So i guess what im looking for is what kind of camera do you guys use??, for still photos and for videos?? right now im leaning toward a sony DCR-SR42 as i do like that i wont have to mess with any kind of discs or tapes, but i also want some thing that takes a good picture too, anyone have one of these and use it to take shots of your plants??

personally - not a fan of sony at all. Canon will make the best camera period, especially in the case of budshots - this is due to shudder speed which is quite superior to most other brands. They are generally $20-100 more than similar cameras of lesser brands. I like fuji (also expensive) after a canon. Next a nikon.

I recently spent some xmas money on a nikon coolpix camera.. under 3-400 dollars you are paying mostly for your visual display lcd screen and not the actual function of the camera. I spent like 120ish, got a good deal. Most will perform very well, it's just little things like shudder speed macro close up options etc. I dont know much about video, but all these take a few minutes of video depending on the size of your memory card

most cameras are plug and play nowadays as well, so dont take discs/tapes or what your concerned about as your deciding factor. Also cameras under 200 rarely come with alot of memory so you need to burn 10-30 on a memory card

I took these shots with my new camera, its a samsung s730, 7.2 mega pixels - it was $150 so not too bad, it can do some killer close up shots, good distance shots. :)

Normally the resolution is over 3000x3000 but i resize them for space and viewer convenience ;)

yeah, wouldn't advise anybody to buy a Sony. You pay more for the name and their after sales service is appalling.

I would get something with a large lens. These high pixel cameras with small lenses are a scam. Yes, they have the pixels, but the lens does not utilise them properly.

Get something midway between a digital and a digital SLR. Will cost you a few hundred but the pics will speak for themselves and it won't need to be upgraded soon.

I have a Fuji s9500 myself ... great camera.

If ya want a video camera buy one seperatley. I've had a couple and still shots are never great unless ya wanna spend big books.

Canon family here. You can't go wrong with a Canon PowerShot. There are many diff ones, so go with what you can afford.

My new PowerShot has a slower shutter speed then my last one, and after doing some research I realize that the # of batteries used can help with that. My new one takes only two AA, and my last one took 4, and had a faster shutter speed. But both take excellent shots and short videos.

How much are you wanting to spend? Perhaps I can window shop for you. ;)

id love some help Mom ive been price watched to death here looking at all of them :fid:. The thing is as many of us are awaiting a tax check :hubba: we have done ours and found out that we willbe getting back about 10 grand so price isnt really an option as ive been told that i get 3 grand for toys but as i am not a go and get the super high tech stuff i look for quality and price. im now leaning toward a fugi film package that i found and the sony camcorder with a hard drive. links here FUJI CAMERA PACKAGE (http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=E3FJFPS700) and SONY CAMCORDER (http://www.bwayphoto.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ID=2585013&l=ShopCartUSA) not bad for it all its less than $700.;)

Awesome site for specifics and reviews on different cameras.

Like I said, I am a loyal Canon gal. ;) You can get an excellent quality Canon for under $300. Now if you're big on photography and stuff you will spend more for fancy features. But to me it sounds like you're basically wanting a point & shoot with a video option?>?

Checked out that link. That Fuji camera deal looks pretty good. Got a large lens and most importantly, "full manual control". Good luck

The results are in man have i been :hairpull: over this camera hunting expedition Ive gone through. but Ive decided to get a Canon :ya: Thanks again SM for that link did some reviews and compared prices on the net and wow did the savings just go around  To see what Ive picked Broadway Photo (http://www.bwayphoto.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ID=3227019&l=ShopCartUSA) had the best price on the camera its self, and Beach Camera (http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?omid=125&ref=pricewatch&utm_source=PriceWatch&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CNPSS5&sku=CNPSS5) had the best package accessories package i chose the platinum :hubba:, and Camera Addict (http://www.cameraaddict.com/viewproduct.aspx?ID=3621730&l=ShopCartUSA)(love that name ) had the camcorder with the hard drive, which IMO is a better choice then you don't need tapes and disc's etc and man i played with one of them and that thing is tiny, simply amazing. last one i bought weighed like 30 pounds and took up half the closet ;) all said and done it will run about 1 grand U.S. and thats with the cameras coming over nighted. :D
