Hi, my first post, how you all doin?
Just have some questions regarding growing. Answering as much as any of you know would be MUCH appreciated and a big help.
First do seeds have to be newer? What about having seeds for a few months now, are they usable or just no good?
How much does the light have to be from the plant/pot? Inches wise (Growing a small amount)
How many hours does it need if you're starting out?
Is there a certain type of soil to use/buy? If so how much would you fill the growing pot out with it?
How deep would you plant the seeds?
Most important question: How much water would it need (starting out as well, using the size of a water bottle) and how often?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out! Happy times!

before you germ your first seed id spend at least 2 weeks reading everything you can in the link hick posted and the board in general. then youll have an idea of how you want to go about things. i did just this and still made mistakes and spent money on things i didnt need or just didnt work for me. id also start your first grow with some bagseed just to get the hang of it. im 2 months into it on my second grow and i finally have it figured out. its not hard, i just made some new guy mistakes. read a lot and then read more. look in the grow journals and get ideas. id be more than willing to help with all the mistakes i made if that would help

Thanks...
If you read this (sure you will if you're a moderator) I'd like to bring up a past growing experiment. Basically my friend just got some randem soil out of his garage, threw it in a decently-sized growing pot, put it in a cardboard cardboard box and used a flourescent light. It did alright for about the first two weeks... did not grow rapidly (guess it really doesn't do that since it is a lengthy process) but it got up to about three or four inches and a few small unsmokable leafs obviously. It did not grow much after a week or so, however he put it outside, tiny bugs got to it, and that was the end.
My question is what went wrong before he put it outside? It did not seem like it grew a whole lot after it got to it's three or four inches... he consistently watered it.. it was a small plant so did he water it to much? That is also my question how much water from a water bottle size, do you need to put for a plant of that particular size. Pardon my ignorance, I will read more about it within the next week or so, but I'm just trying to get some answers.

Without knowning more about the light he was using I think its safe to say it was probably not adequate. If you want to tell us more about the bulb you will get a clearer response on lighting. The soil is likely fine but if you want to tell us more great. Constantly watering sounds BAD. I am in the mist of some watering issues so I probably shouldnt comment any further lol. Myself and others I have read water completly through the medium ensuring everything is soaked. You should have run off through the proper drainage assuming your pots have them. If I was going to give a plant 1 gallon of water I would ensure there was at least 1 cup of run off. In all seriousness consider reading the FAQ's above. I have been knocking a few out each day. Good luck
