I want to keep my grow as small as possible, and so far HEIGHT has been the biggest obstacle. therefore I'm looking to go with a SCROG - type method to control height. An idea I came up with to make the plant grow horizontally is to put the plant into a glass tube shaped into an upward climbing spiral, much like a CFL light, but on a larger scale. Does anyone know if growing in a glass tube would cause problems, assuming heat is taken care of?

whatever you do just stay away from topping. But i wouldn't use that method either. I know when plants start to get too big, people will take the top of the plant and bend it down to where it's not breaking the plant but where it's near horizontal. THen just take a steak and steak it in the ground and tie the top of the plant to it holding it at that near horizontal position. That way it'll continue to grow somewhat sideways. If the tip after that tries to grow upwards, tie that part down and you can eventually have a plant growing ajacent with the ground. It's neat. just keep it off the ground for pest issues. good luck with whatever method you choose :P

Good example of LST
whatever you do just stay away from topping.
"topping" is a perfectly legitimate technique for SCROG especially. Allowing a plant to remaiin 'centered' under the screen, while training the multiple tops out, to fill the screen.

I think topping while using the SCROG method is just perfect. You need those extra tops to fill the screen up. If height is a problem, just top or lst the plants. That will keep them short and bushy. Hope this helps. Take care and keep us posted. Be safe.
