I recently.... "Aquired", a 50 watt HPS bulb from a home depot, and i am just wondering how exactly to have it plugged in and working. do i absolutley NEED a ballast?

I'm pretty sure that you need a ballast to run any of the HPS lights. You might want to get some other opinions on this.
did you purchase only a bulb?..if so, yes you must have a ballast. If you purchased the entire light fixture, it is ballasted.

Yeah. all i got is the bulb. but what should i screw it into? Thanks so far.
a ballast contains a mogul socket. The ballast must match the bulb wattage and socket type. 250W HPS bulb needs a 250W HPS ballast kit.
Your best bet is to go to insidesun.com or another online store and purchase a complete light kit. then you will have an extra bulb as well incase one burns out.
