come mid winter i'm planning to grow indoors but yet havent decided yet weather to do hydro or soil. i am a beginner to all the grow world i started my first grow ever outdoors. link in signature.
but i also wanna take this indooor thing a whole different approach. i mean im a newb and wanna do hydro after extensive reading and research on hydroponics. but i'd like to set up a grow box/area and try growin somethin legal as a trial first. somethin i dont have to constantly be stewing wether im gonna get caught or not...
all i am wondering is, is there or are there any plants that grow almost identical to MJ as far as stages and wat have you. somethin i can do a practice run wit first that way if i kill my first grow by a mistake or goof then i wont be so devastated by the fact that say if i get my plants all the way to flowering and having to see em die cuz of a stupid mistake. this way like if i used somethin other than MJ in hydro an it dies it be no big.
i love strawberries and every year i try oputside to grow the dam things but they never work out and store bought strawberries dont tast nothin lie fresh ones. same as goes for my liking an taste for tomatoes.
can u LST supercropp top fim all that wit say tomatoes and do they veg an bloom same way as mj lightin wise nutes all that... if not wat plant is close to MJ. thanks in advance
strawberries i'm gonna do irregardless cuz im cravin fresh ones dangit and u can never find fresh or even good ones in the winter here.

hello...I am just a dirt farmer from USA and only Bath in Large tubs of water..Am interested in it tho..I would say work with Tomato plant to get indoor system setup..they are simular..if you can get a Tomato to grow you can grow a MJ plant..all that is needed is light, proper air exchange, and water..as for strawbarries..IDK they need lots of room to grow..not sure of your space inside..Hope this helps..if not atleast I brought it back to the top 4U

wit the strawberries deal i'm only talkin maybe 2 even one plant just to do it and maybe one or 2 tomatoe plants but who knows. i'm gonna google growing strawberries and they grow cycles etc an see wats up wit them.
but do you think u can do like LST and cropping to tomatoes like mj?
i'd like to practice on a dummy first than risk mutilatin my mj the first go round. lolanyone ever done this wit tomatoes at all?

ok i'm contemplating now with going with a simple hydro route wit my trial run of cherry tomatoes and maybe a pepper plant or two for a trial run on hydro before my winter MJ grow time.
this route using one them plastic totes wit holes in lid for the planters to slide into wit the aerorator pump and bubble stone bar on bottom of the tote. now my only concern wit this method is two things..
1: water---- how often do u add water and will the light damage roots when i lift the lid to fill more water in? and do u have to change the water out ever?
2: Nutrients--- A. now do i have to use special Hydroponics blended nutes for hydro or can i use similar nutes i use when soil growing.
B. how do i mix the nutes (dosage amount) and how often do i administer nutes?
C. and when i add more water do i mix nutes wit it prior to ever adding water everytime consistent wit the right dosage (nute to water ratio)?
PS. which types of grow medium work best wit this type hydro setup?
Please, any input info or feedback on how to run this type of show would be greatly appreciated. thank-you all

Its is possible to grow without ever changing your water (not recommended though) if you just adjust your ph and add to the reservoir to hit the levels you are trying to achieve. I would suggest changing your water out once a week. If I can suggest anything to you before you fill your rez for the first time make sure you have a plan on how you are going to empty it. I built 3 foot tables to sit my tub on then went to the hydro store and bought some drain plugs (you just drill a hole and screw them in 30 seconds and you got a drain). Then I went to my local plumbing store and picked up a couple of ball valves that fit onto the end of the drain stems. Now all I need to do to change my water is put a pail under the drain, turn the valve and voila done. Close your drain and add new water.
As far as the nutrients go just pick yourself up a good three part (I reccommend advanced nutrients) and follow the directions on the label. Pretty simple stuff, people hear the word hydroponics and automatically think its super scientific and hard to use. I find it easier than dirt, its clean, and once you have a system in place your maintenance is next to none. I am comfortable checking my plants once a week once they get passed the stretching phase in flowering.

i was just now thinkin of using a large cooler which will have a tighter sealed lid and less light tryin to get in to have to worry bout covering and it already has a drain plug in it so all i gotta do is lift it and say let it drain in a pail or watever... funny how while i was thinkin of this u were prolly posting this huh lol. thanks. also bein a cooler is thicker and insulated etc it would reduce the bubblin noise from inside that i know is pretty noticable when wanting stealth. here's the cooler im talkin bout. i got 3 just like it so i wont really missit lol.75471 its even got wheels in case i wanna take my girls for a stroll sometime lol jokin..
but as nutes go, when u say get some 3 part advanced nutes. wat do u mean ("3 part") advanced nutes...?
Thanks

litre's i have no clue but i'd say it bout 15-20 gallons. its a big *** cooler man. hence the reason for wheels im guessin.
does it matter on size of the tub ya usin really. i'm tyhinkin only four plants depending on size maybe more not sure yet...
just measured it its 12"inches deep 12"inches wide and 25"inches long (dimensions if that says anythin. it doesnt say how many litres or gallons anywhere on it.

Oh yeah you should be good to go for 4 plants then let us know what you decide and post pics of the final product. Good luck.
i cannot agree with Tater more...i started with hydro and never really had a major problem. a little MG def here, a little battle with algae there and thats about it. and i never even grew a houseplant before! just read and read (sounds like you done that) and follow directions. my biggest prob was moderate leaf burn cause i thought i knew more than the books, etc. on my second grow...but noone should be scared of hydro. i graduated to soil after 5 hydrogro's just for a change pretty much and can definately say hydro is much cleaner( it is nice not to change out 20 gal every week though;)
as for the maters', i used em for supercrop/lst/toppin practice and they responded pretty much like the MJ did. good luck and dem hydrawberries gotta be good:hubba:

i been hearin that alot in here thruout the forums that hydro is so much easier and cleaner etc than soil. hence y im gonna give it a try. also i doubt my outdoor grow this year will last me thru next year outdoor harvest time so i gotta do somethin this winter. also i thought it'd be a neat hobby for them cold days when it snowin an stuff...
the strawbery (hydroberries) thing... i'm not sure bout yet as i'm seein they like to crawl or stretch cross the ground like vines and i',m thinkin i'd need quite bit of surface atop my setup for this reason and thus expanding watever light hood i do devise... so maybe thinkin of stickin wit the cherry tomaters and maybe some peppers. figure i could learn first hand the technique of the LST topping fimming etc.. witout worryin bout killin or destroyin a beautiful mj plant.
and yes i have been doin and still doin homework on all this so i have no loose ends or wat have ya when i do start it. thanks again everyone. i greatly appreciate ya advice and comments. feel free to suggest anythin. i'm all ears to others experiences.

You are in for a treat, hydro is a very cool beast. Its so awesome to watch how fast your roots grow and what not. Have fun man.

As a former "dirt farmer" and not changing guy myself, I am glad I finally tried a hydro build, to me building it myself was the initial draw! I was amazed at how fast, how full and what I could manipulate in the grows. You will enjoy hydro I guarantee. Check your local gro shops as they grow all kinds of fruits and veggies and have seen a nice ebb/flo system growing strawberries at one of mine. I have only grown MJ in mine and wish I had started with another fruit to "dial in" my setup! I killed 3 plants getting my watering right.
Cheers and good luck

If you try to experiment with tomatoes... Remeber that MJ is a bit more touchy on nutrients... In hydro I think it is impossible to burn a tomato plant, They are Nute hogs.... I had a couple in my MJ grow a while back and had their PPMs up over 2K and they were growing strong, I think the tomatoes were actually asking for MORE!!! LOL... If you get MJ too far over 800-1K, it will start locking out. (edit) this nute level is for DWC growing.... with drip and othe methods you can get a bit higher.
G'Luck and welcome to the hydro side 8)...
