Well for the past 4 or 5 days my dog has been acting real strange. She won't jump and only comes out to use the bathroom and eat. We know she had a problem with her back leg so we decided to take her to the vet yesterday. Come to find out she had a dislocated knee cap. It was nasty when the Doc snapped it back in. He gave me some pain and inflamation meds for her and sent me on my way. I just hope it doesn't pop back out because she screams so load when she's in pain i can't stand it. :(
Sorry to hear about that man. I hope she recovers fast.

Did he recommend any glucosamine? It can be very helpful for joint things in dogs.

that sucks, I had to put my dog down a few months ago. It felt like the end of my childhood. I got her when I was 8 or 9. She survived some crazy stunts, even parvo virus, but cancer was found in her lungs and she was having a hard time breathing and they gave her about 24 hours and I really didn't want to wake up to a dead dog... I hope yours gets better, it's hard to watch your friend in pain:(

Thanks everyone. It really does **** watching my little baby in pain but she is doing much better today. :) I think getting her leg put back into it's socket worked . Either that or she is to high on the pain meds i have been giving her. :D
Hey HH. I hope you get to enjoy the time you have left with your dog. It really sucks when ya lose one it's just like family.
Hey AreoTX sorry about your dog. Did ya get another? I know when my first dog died i swore not to get another and i had another one a week later. Like they say they are mans best friend.
Hey BD he gave me some pain and inflamation medication called Rimadyl.
Biffdoggie
08-24-2006, 10:13 PM
They gave me some of that rimadyl also, I would go read up on it. It has become one of those "wonder drugs" that they just toss off to everyone. It has been rather effective for a lot of things but has also had some bad sides. It made my dog breathe hard all night so I quit giving it, go have yourself a read.
Glucosamine is pretty cheap, you can just get the stuff for people and give it to them, it's not a drug but a supplement.

glucosamine is for arthritis, which can be in every1's human body. when this dries up you get the opposite of emflamed joints. you get dry sockets that hurt like hell. the GLC replentishes the bodies supply or GLS; any good health food store should have it. my father took it fer 20 years. a 160 lb man took 2 - 1000mg tabs a day so judge yer dogs weight and adjust accordingly. i find that non coated baby aspirin works fer small breeds - ask yer vet.
theres also a good website called www.about.com just put dogs into the search bar

Whats up everyone. Once again our dog has been acting strange for the past few weeks so we took her to the vet yesterday. She has been drinking tons of water and urinating just as much. So we get to the vet and he says she has a urine infection. Fine i say and he gives me some meds for her to take. Then he says let me do a blood test on her. I say fine and ten minutes later he comes out and tells me our dog is a diabetic. :( *** is this gonna cost us. She is gonna have to get shots everyday for the rest of her life. We have to take her back to the vet in a few days and leave her for the whole day so he can give her her first shot and see how she reacts. Does anyone on here have a diabetic dog or know of anyone?

Hey Tbg, sorry to hear about that. Cant say ive heard of a dog with diabetes, A freind of mines dog suffers from epilepsy, which is very odd. Im sure your dog will cope with the change, in my work im surrounded by animals and its always amazing to see the things that they can cope with. I hope all goes well :)

Man TBG, you would think that they would have a canine version of the human pills "Metformin Hydrochloride" that you could put in her food or a treat each day. Shots seem pretty radical.
I hope she does well man.
Here's some Green MoJo from the pygmy for her man!

Thank you everyone. She seems to be doing much better. We have to give her two shots of insulin a day in the back of her neck. It doesn't seem to bother her and the Doc said she will be much happier and live alot longer. It's gonna cost us about $60 a month but she is worth every penny.
Since it's human insulin my brother is gonna see if his insurance will cover it at work. Hell it's worth a try right. Once again thank you everyone and my baby sends you all a big lick. :D

I had the same ups and down with my "Brindle" when she was getting up in years. She was one of those once in a lifetime dogs. She was my wedding present from my husband, we picked her up from the SPCA when we got back into town from our "honeymoon".
Speaking of which....we always appall people when we say we went to Oregon and caught crabs on our honeymoon...ROFL, actually we caught true crabs on the coast and I went to boil them in a pot when I realized I just didn't have the heat I needed with no lid, I got a brainstorm idea. I went to the car and took off the air cleaner lid...PERFECT!... hahahha
Anyhow...(yap yap yap) egads i must be high

Good morning,
hope your dear friend comes out OK. I have two German Shepards , the male Harley caught pneumonia and we had a heck of a time trying to keep him alive. $ 900.00 later with the vet I had to hand feed him a special diet and grind his daily intake of pills up in his food. The vet and I talked about putting him down and gave him another week. Well ol Harley must have heard our conversation cause within the end of that week he was showing a vast improvement. Now he acts like there was nothing wrong with him...a lucky dog. Yeah hurts real bad when a loved one hurts and you feel helpless. Once again hope your friend gets better

Oh no TBG, I am sorry to hear about your poochie. :(
We had a dog that slowly went blind due to cataracts. She actually learned to get around pretty well. Towards the end she was bumping into everything, but she still had a great spirit.

Thank you everyone for your very kind words. We  LOVE  her more than anything. It just sucks that the little turd has to go through all this crap. She has been through alot over the last 4 or 5 months. :( Well i'm sure she will learn to adapt to her enviorment as i have been doing some research on the net. It said that most dogs if not all learn. :) We were thinking of maybe getting her a seeing eye dog. Anyway our baby sends big licks to everyone. :p Will let you all know what happens when she sees the vet this week. ;)

TBG im sorry to hear about your dogs struggles lol.. i mean, i thought ours had it rough, lost a few had a few more loved them all the same you know how it is, but your girl seems to have it pretty bad :(
still.. all is not bad as dogs are one of the most adaptive animals around.. i mean theyll adapt to being blind, being lame, losing teeth, nothing seems to get them down! i just hope shes ok, the last thing im sure anyone wants is to loose a member of there family.
so good luck and give your dog a big belly rub from riz and doc green lol

Doggie downer, TBG. Two years ago our dog was diagnosed with bone cancer. They thought we should put her down, but she was only 6 and we loved her like a child, so we couldnt' do it. She ended up getting one of her legs amputated, then had to go thru radiation. :(
Believe it or not, she learned to get around just fine on 3 legs..she could run, jump up on the couch and do almost everything she did before. And after a brief period of depression (right after the amputation) she returned to her old self with her great happy spirit. Sadly the cancer returned late last year and she died just before Christmas. :(
I swore I would never get another dog, but last month we adopted another one from a rescue org. She is a great dog and has helped us cope with the loss of our first baby. I hope your baby makes a speedy recovery, but remember that dogs are adaptable. While it might **** for you to go blind, dogs seem to take it all in stride, as long as they are fed and loved. I do hope you get her a seeing eye dog, tho and maybe some dark Sammy Davis Jr glasses and one of those white canes. She'd look so cool.

Whats up everyone. Well we took the little lady to the vet yesterday and the news wasn't good. The little turd is totally blind in one eye and partially blind in the other eye and she has another urine infection. On top of that her sugar was still high so he raised her insulin. To make matters worse for her she can no longer have any real dog food or treats. Her diet will now consist of Rice, Fruits and vegetables. Anywho that's how her day wen't yesterday.

damn man that sucks, well the only consolation is your dog is still probably pretty happy. one of mine was on rice and chicken for about 2 years with stomach cancer and he was still as happy as the day i found him.. only time he got down was when it really got bad and the cancer spread to his lungs...
She looks real cute and really loved man, the best you can do is give her a good loving home which you have done, and you still have her despite her ailments, and thats what family is man. if only more dog owners were like that

Awwww TBG :(
I know how hard it must be not to give her treats. Is she allowed to have at least chicken broth with the rice?? My vet let me use the chicken flavor when my "late" golden retriever had to be on a special diet at the end as he had cancer. Was only 11 years old and gawd he was my best frd. I didn't even want another dog but my girls were little so of course I had to get them a new puppy....was still difficult. Anywhos we have another retriever...well a yellow lab. He loves table food and omg he will beg for pizza crust. lol I can't even imagine how hard it would be to not be able to give him a treat...so I truly feel for ya. Not like we can explain to them why "mommy" or in your case daddy can't reward them. I am shocked they did not say she could at least have lean white chicken with no skin ...usually that is not all that bad for them. Ask if you can give her just a very small amount >>yanno like a cube for a treat??
Sending your sweet dog LOTS of positive vibes my frd.
....give her a big hug for me! ((((((hugs))))))

Hey TBG, you need some doggie perspective here.
While it would totally blow for you YOU to go blind and have health problems, think of it this way. The reasons YOU would hate to go blind are because: you wouldn't be able to drive, you couldn't work, you couldn't watch tv or use the computer. And most importantly, it would be next to impossible for the Blind TBG to tell the difference between a male and a hermie. Not to mention you'd have to go feeling around your house for your bong if you forgot where you left it. ;)
BUT...think of this from your dog's perspective. She doesn;t drive, use the computer or the tv, no need to work...and sadly she neither grows nor smokes pot :( . In a way, your little pooch has won the lotto here. SHe now has a very attentive servant (that would be you) who will dote on her every whim.
After all, What do dogs live for? Love and Attention. And she;ll be getting it in spades. Okay okay they also live for treats...But they make a lot of diabetic treats that I'm sure your vet will turn you on to.
My husband and I often joke (yes I get called 'bro' and 'dude' a lot on this forum, but I am actually a chick) ...but we often joke that the high point in Bosco's life (our dog who died) was when she was battling cancer. She got doted on like the baby Jesus. She also had a restricted diet, but we would rush home with special treats, we were constantly petting and brushing her. SHe was loving her pampered life!
Anyway, spoil your little baby like there's no tomorrow :baby: . She is lucky to have you.
