Watering question

I was reading a grow journal and say how a guy grew a plant in a cup of dirt. The method he used was to water from the bottom up. Does anyone know if this is a beneficial way to grow? I'm using pots with a tray and could use a turkey baster to put the water into the tray and water up that way? Any comments?

it works but you just want to wait to the roots are at or near the bottom. Its good when you are adding nutes
