Hey guys,
Just started my new grow. Using Stoney's design with his ebb and flow system (works great awesome design man). The problem I'm having is my tap water is around 7.8 only about 50-100 ppm. Even when I adjust the PH down to around 4.5 when I add it to my system, it works its way quickly back up to 7.8. I don't want to keep adding PH down all the time. Will the water you buy in the store be any better? Thanks.
Nope! When roots grow they up the PH value of the solution... also... 4.5 is too low to be giving plants... 5.4 is the lowest that should be given, EVER... and this is only when flowering... 5.8-6.2 is normal... hydro isn't something you can leave alone. You should be checking on the ph every 1-3 days... when the plants are bigger ur gonna find the ph will be dropping more then going up... then ur gonna have the problem in the other direction..
Welcome to hydro! =)

what about when the girls are young, is it going to harm my babies with all this PH down in the system? If i adjust down to 5.5PH and about 2-3 days later its back up 7.5. It takes about 3-5ml to get the 16gallon res down.

You could have 50 gallons of ph down in the res and it won't matter... as long as the ph is in the proper range. =)
I have really high ph, 7.6 here, I ended up buying a reverse osmosis setup. Knocks the ph right down to 6,and ppm 0. They really are not that expensive, and then you know exactly what you are getting for your plants.

7.6 is in the proper range for perfect tap water. Ppm isn't a big deal unless u have hard water.
Ppm is around 350 out of my tap. (well water). That is my main reason for switching to RO.

My tap water runs anywhere from 7.8-9.0 with an EC of around 340! I overcame that by letting the water sit for 24 hours to let the chlorine and ammonia evaporate. Then I mix in the nutes and wait another 4-8 hours before checking PH. When I started doing that, I hardly ever had to add PH down, and the PH was stable for at least a week.

A perfect tap water example!!! =)
