The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office made arrests over the past week in three indoor marijuana growing operations, including two that were discovered by accident as deputies came to the residence on unrelated business.

About 8 p.m. Tuesday, Hawkins County deputies were dispatched to 280 Wolfe Branch Road, Bulls Gap, to assist in the retrieval of a vehicle that had reportedly been borrowed and not returned.

While in the detached garage — which had a section converted into a bedroom — deputies allegedly observed evidence of an indoor growing operation including three empty pots, soil, fertilizer and baggies. Narcotics unit detectives were called to the residence and found three marijuana plants that had been recently pulled and tossed over an embankment in the back yard, police said.

Deputies then acquired a search warrant for the main house and seized 10 marijuana plants growing in the bedroom, as well as several firearms, a set of postal scales, marijuana seeds, a small amount of marijuana, and ledgers outlining a marijuana growing schedule, police said.

In the garage, deputies found a grinder containing marijuana residue and a set of postal scales, police said.

Two residents of the garage apartment were arrested — Charles Edward Beavers Jr., 19, and Travis Lynn Crittenden, 28 — as well as the resident of the house, Charles Edward Beavers Sr., 44.

All three were charged with manufacturing marijuana, maintaining a dwelling where narcotics are housed and sold, possession of marijuana, and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.

In an unrelated case, Hawkins County deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant last Friday on a person reportedly staying at 1440 Wolfe Lane, Lot B-19, Mount Carmel, when William Jerome Zeigler, 56, of that address, allegedly attempted to flush marijuana plants down the toilet.

As deputies knocked on the door, they reportedly heard Zeigler “running around inside the residence.”

When Zeigler finally did open the door, deputies allegedly smelled marijuana and called narcotics unit Detectives Brad Depew and Chad Gillenwater to the residence. A search of the residence revealed a small indoor marijuana growing operation in a bedroom closet that included aluminum foil lined walls, heat lamps, fans and pots of soil, police said.

“Mr. Zeigler stated he had pulled all the plants and attempted to flush them down the toilet when officers initially knocked at the door,” Gillenwater said. “At that time, part of a marijuana plant was recovered from the toilet.”

Zeigler was charged with manufacturing marijuana, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Saturday, the HCSO Narcotics Unit received a tip about an alleged marijuana grow at the residence of Robert F. Click, 48, 362 Clicktown Road, Church Hill.

When deputies entered the residence, they allegedly found Click sitting on the couch beside a loaded .45-caliber handgun. In the master bedroom deputies allegedly found a loaded .22-caliber rifle, a loaded .410 shotgun, marijuana seeds, and books on how to grow marijuana.

“I then looked in the bathroom, where I observed several mature marijuana plants growing under lights,” Depew stated in his report. “The lights were on a timer, and several fans were blowing on the plants. Also in the room fertilizer, potting soil and seeds were found.”

A search of the living room allegedly revealed marijuana, loose and packaged, along with seeds, scales, rolling papers and water bongs. Depew stated that marijuana was found in various stages of drying throughout the residence.

The total amount of marijuana seized was three pounds, police said.

Click was charged with manufacturing marijuana, possession of marijuana for resale, possession of a weapon during commission of a felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a dwelling where narcotics are used or sold.

lol that grow never would have produced a smokable product in the end anyway....

i always see myself hopelessly trying to argue that cops should have to grow the plants to harvest to charge you. what if they were 90% male? what if your grow just sucked? what if you dont know what you are doing and never would have finished?
