Abbotsford police have arrested a man in connection with a large-scale marijuana growing operation on a rural property in an area that recently came under their policing jurisdiction.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Monday, the Abbotsford police drug squad executed a search warrant at a home in the 4900 block of Upper Sumas Mountain Road in a previously unorganized area of Abbotsford known as Area H that was serviced by the RCMP.

"Like other rural areas in Abbotsford it is vulnerable to marijuana grow operations because of large, isolated properties," said Abbotsford police Const. Casey Vinet in a press release. "It certainly comes as no surprise that a substantial grow operation was located and we suspect there are others."

In all, police seized more than 1,100 plants from an outbuilding on the property. The main dwelling was being used to process and package the marijuana for further distribution. Police suspect the operation was in place for at least two years.

A 45-year-old Surrey resident, who police believe was responsible for looking after the operation, was arrested at the scene and is facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and production of a controlled substance.
