Not sure if this is posted in the right place or not? I need to buy a new camera so that I can post some pics and start a grow journal. I can't wait to show the good people on MP what they have helped me accomplish. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I know very little about cameras, so any help would be much appreciated. I have an old kodak digital camera but it does not take very clear pics anymore and I lost the cord that hooks to my computer. Something in the 200 dollar range would be nice but if I have to spend a little more I will. Thanks.

one thats capable of taking macro shots for close ups of trichome shots...i just bought a cannon powershot, 12.1 megapixels, with 4x zoom lens for $130 US dollars...

you can see shots from this camera in the grow journal in my signature...any pics after xmas is with the new cannon...peace...

irish is on the money. Canon is an excellent choice, i have 3 of them. i've owned nixon, fuji, kodak and sony. Canon is the best (to me) for digital photos. the pics i post here are a mix of canon point-n-shoot and canon Rebel Xti; one cost about $100 the other cost $600+. you are welcome to look at them and see if you can tell the difference.

Thanks for the help. That is exactly what I am looking for Irish! I checked out the pics in your signature and they are exactly what I am looking to achieve. And at a great price. Thank You.

I have a Sony α33, if you're willing to spend the money on something like it. With interchangeable lenses, you can switch to a more macro-appropriate lens that will give you lovely, close-up porn. I took my camera to Amsterdam and took a few pictures without the macro lens (just the one that came with it when I bought it).

Thanks! It's definitely worth investing in a good camera if you want good pictures. Though, I do regret not going for a Nikon. They're the best quality cameras out there.

I've always had Canons, and it seems the quality has really gone down, well in the models I've had.

I just bought a Nikon Cool Pix s8100. I pick it up today in the store. It has wonderful reviews and I'm excited about the switch. It's on sale at Walmart online, for $150.

I'll try the macro and get back with you.

Oh! Check out all cameras (or anything electronic, lol) at cnet. Great, credible reviews from some pros.

Good luck in your search.

Yep, it is a beautiful day here :) I also want to get a better camera -- I plan on looking around for one when I'm not to stoned to leave the boat, lol

Who knows when that will be :)

Peace

So basically any camera that has a flower will work fine? The more zoom the better?

Kinda. If you want really good, up close photos then you need to find one that has a macro setting or, better yet, a lens used for up-close photography. The macro setting on the camera tends to have the symbol of a flower.

From Wikipedia on macrophotography:
"'Macro' lenses specifically designed for close-up work, with a long barrel for close focusing, are one of the most common tools for macrophotography. (Nikon designates such lenses as 'Micro' because of their original use in making microforms, but most lens makers use the term 'Macro' or 'Makro.') These lenses are optimized for high reproduction ratios. Most modern macro lenses can focus continuously to infinity as well, using complex focusing mechanisms that alter the optical formula. In most cases these lenses provide excellent optical quality when used for normal photography, although a macro lens may be optimized to provide its best performance at its highest magnification. True macro lenses, such as the Canon MP-E 65 mm f/2.8 or Minolta AF 3x-1x 1.7-2.8 Macro, can achieve higher magnification than life size, enabling photography of the structure of small insect eyes, snowflakes, and other minuscule objects. Others, such as the Infinity Photo-Optical's TS-160 can achieve magnifications from 0-18x on sensor, focusing from infinity down to 18mm from the object. However, macro lenses with 1:1 or 1:2 ratios are more common, and many of these find frequent use for general photography because of their excellent optics.
Macro lenses of different focal lengths find different uses:
Continuously Variable Focal Length — suitable for virtually all macro subjects
45–65 mm — product photography, small objects that can be approached closely without causing undesirable influence, and scenes requiring natural background perspective
90–105 mm — insects, flowers, and small objects from a comfortable distance
150–200 mm — insects and other small animals where additional working distance is required"

My camera, for instance, does have the ability to use a variety of lenses but since it was a bit expensive it did a nice job of taking pictures of the nug I showed before. Though, there are a variety of digital cameras that you can now swap the lenses on so you can achieve a DSLR effect without the large body. As far as brands go, Nikon is the best in my opinion. Cheers!
