Lightbulb Help Please - setting up super soil grow

I have a friend who needed some answers. They tried at the growery to no avail. Not a single response. I told them, marijuana passion is full of info and good folks.

Hope everyone's been well.

Have not used these methods before, and ran in to some questions.

Hope to be able to help a friend, and hope more to share future success here....

Heard great and interesting things about sub Cool's super soil, decided to try.

am getting my super soil ready, few questions.

1. Being cold out, highs around 30s and 40s, I've mixed up my soil in the basement using a 100gal big bag grow bed and put a tarp down in it. Mixed it up and wrapped the tarp over it. My average basement Temps are 50 to 55 and 50-60% humidity. Is this enough or should I place a space Heater near by?

2. I added 1gal of water to start and had some coco blocks I soaked in 2.5gals of water to soak up and added that after breaking it up real good. Do I just keep adding more water and stir it over the next week before letting it set? Got mixed directions with that reading and watching videos on it.

3. Is this an okay way to store it? It's an 8x10ft tarp so every corner wrap over to the other side to complete cover it with all 4 corners

I made a half batch of Subcools recipe. 4 large bags of soil.

Thanks Marijuana Passion in advance for any help!

1. Yes add a heater until you have lights in the space. Lights will heat the plants and soil when growing.
2. Coco needs to be rinsed very well to remove salt. Drain all the water and squeeze it damp, then add fresh water and repeat a few times.
3. Sure that works for storage.

Hey thanks Rosebud. Good to see a vouch for umbra. I remember both of you from my time here, much more reading than posting..... Hope to have more to share. Place is lookin good as usual!

There are high hopes for this method. Wonder if it's good to go as is using sub's recipe (if indeed it can be called "sub's") or if there are any quality or necessary improvements to try...

Also starting to collect horse and goat poo mixed with hay for future use.... But that's another topic, isn't it?

subby's soil mix can be a bit hot for seedlings, if you are growing from seed. just cut the super soil with regular soil 50/50.

Well hell that's good to know. it's good for cuttings though I imagine.... Nice root system started out should be able to take it, but that's good to know about it. Thank you again!

And by hot do you mean temperature hot or nitrogen burn hot?

Moo if you haven't done so already, go to the organics sections or go to some of the online colleges and look at organics. Read up on it because organics is ALL about the symbiosis of beneficial microbes and your plants. The relationship of the microbes and the plants is critical to the success of your grows. If you haven't seen it quoted here already, "you feed the soil", and let the microbes feed your plants. You are in good hands with these guys.

Thanks for the info I'm the one who originally asked the question. I put a heater in the room, I'm attaching a picture because where I'm doing the soil is different from my grow room. It's hidden room just big enough for my 2 tents and a cabinet. put a temp gage near it to see how much the heater helps but I don't have a good way to put lights over it. I have 1 HPS Tube I used in my last grow but switching to LEDs this go to help with energy cost.

It's my first time making the soil (obviously with all the noob questions) so I'm just worried about microbial process starting and my soil not ruining. Because as I'm sure you all know it's not really cheap buying all the nutes and all.

So, heaters going. Been mixing it the past 2 days just once a day. Seems pretty moist just not soggy wet. Am I good to just let it set over the next 30 to 60 days or so? Until the mycelium forms and then stir it in?
P
Thanks again for the help! And Hushpuppy I'll be sure and do that, more knowledge I can get on it the easier it will get.

Oh and I'm starting my seeds and later clones in Rockwool cubes. Got the Smalls to start and the transplant cube too. Then I'll move to soil.
I got some kangaroot to use for the cubes. That should be the only nutrients I need when starting in the Rockwool right?

Thanks Hushpuppy for advice, and all else as well. Will always be reading.. these are things I need to know, ya see?

Glad you joined Okie, keeps me from goin', "yo Okie, hush puppy said this, and umbra said that," therefore keeping you from telling me to say, " hey [gifted MP Poster], Okie wanted me to tell you this, this & this, and also ask this...." Hah
Can't wait to see your work man!

Thank you all for speedy responses helping to convince Okie this is the place to be. It worked! And now soon we shall drool at more weed-porn!

Feel like I may have messed up...
I moved my soil inside to a room that stays a constant 70-75 degrees. After being in the basement basement for 2 weeks it hadn't activated yet. So moved it and started activating within 2 days. Left it for a week and it grew a decent amount of mycelium over the top and I saw some chunks of coco that hadn't separated enough so I decided to stir it all up some.
2 more weeks has passed and it's passed the 30 day cook period and hasn't built up anymore mycelium and is cool through out the whole pile. Is it done? Did i mess up the process by mixing it again to soon? Or should I let it sit another month or so?

No you didn't ruin it by stirring it. I would have to know your recipe to know if it is too hot.. What did you use for the N? If it wasn't well rotted than 30 days isn't enough, ya know? Are you kinda in a hurry like I usually am? The time in the basement probably did not cook it.

Not so much in a hurry, the sooner I can start the better but I'm still waiting on a few things. I used subcools recipe.. but only did a half batch and was unable to find humid acid so didn't add any but was told the fox farm ocean soil I used for my base soil should have it in it, same with the bat guano.
The blood meal I'm assuming is my N..

It doesn't stink or smell bad, it's nice an moist now not soggy. And I have a heater by it set at 74.
So if I need to let it sit another 30 days or so I have no problem doing so. Just no more mixin? thanks for the help

Are you using new ffof or some that you have already used?If it is new, that is going to be some pretty hot soil. I would definitely cook your soil more. Blood meal is very hot. Did you use rice hulls or perlite or something to help with drainage?

It is new soil and I added an extra 3lb bag of perlite and will be adding clay rocks to the mix in containers. And I plan to start my seeds in Rockwool till they're big enough to handle the hot soil. Do you think that will be okay? As well as giving it another month or so to cook more?
