Going green is usually a cost effective, smart way to save money. However, that didn't work out very well for two men in east Charlotte who took it to a new level by growing marijuana with stolen power.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Jorge Luis Correa and Ivan Montalvo in relation to a marijuana grow operation at a home located on Dunfries Road.

Last week after a tip, officers went to the location and met with the homeowner Jorge Correa, who gave the officers consent to enter the home. Once inside the home, officers detected a strong smell of marijuana and asked the homeowner for consent to search, but their request was denied.

Officers then obtained a search warrant for the home and discovered an elaborate marijuana grow operation constructed in the garage.

Approximately fifty marijuana plants were discovered in various stages of growth and more than $10,000 in cash was recovered from the home.

Police also determined that the suspects connected a subterranean power line to the home, bypassing the power meter in an effort to steal electrical service from Duke Energy.

Both Correa and Montalvo have been charged with Trafficking in Marijuana, Manufacturing Marijuana, Maintaining a Dwelling to Sell Controlled Substance and Conspire to Sell Marijuana.
