A truck fire developed into a drug bust Saturday for Kelso police.
Kelso police initially went to the 300 block of North Eighth Avenue late Friday night to speak with the owner of a pickup someone had set afire.
As Officer Ken Hochhalter approached the open door of the house, he smelled the strong and distinct odor of marijuana growing inside, he wrote in his report.
He pretended not to notice the smell as he dealt with the pickups owner. Then he returned to the station and applied for a search warrant.
Police served the warrant early Saturday morning. Hochhalter said as police entered, suspect Jerry Dale Wolf, 25, shouted a warning to co-suspect Malory Nichole Demyan, 21.
Police said Demyan later admitted flushing Percocet down the toilet after she heard Wolf shout. Several pills were recovered from the bathroom floor, police said.
Police said the attic had been converted for growing marijuana. Other rooms in the house contained drying marijuana, plant starts and growing materials, the report said.
Wolf told officers he grows marijuana legally for people who use it medicinally, but he was unable to provide documentation to prove his statement, police said.
Police said they also seized two firearms.
Wolf was booked on suspicion of two counts of manufacture/delivery of narcotics and being a felon in possession of a firearm, with initial bail set at $25,000.
Demyan was booked on suspicion of illegal possession of prescription medicine and manufacturing marijuana. Bail was set at $10,000.
