hey everyone,
i was just wondering if anyone would know an effiecient growing cycle for growing plants indoors.
i heard if growing from the seed:
18 hours light, 6 hours dark for the vegetative growth period(3-4 months) than,
12hours light,12 hours dark for flowering stage(2-3 months)
is that a standard growing cycle or am i way off.?
is it possible to reduce the amount of veg growth and still produce the same yeild?
if anyone has any ideas on how to speed up the process, or maybe the most effecient way of growing it would be greatly appreciated if the information was shared.
thank you very much

Hi robbyc,
You are pretty much on track -- I might suggest 24 hrs. of light during the vegetative stage, including starting from seed. How are you germinating the seeds? You don't want to place HID lights close to the young seedlings, but you can use flouros quite nicely and place them roughly an inch from your starts. By the way, is this project hydro or soil? That can make a difference as to how long you are in the vegetative cycle. It is hard for me to say "standard" because most growers have their own little techniques they have developed over time. I'm not quite sure what you mean about reducing the amount of vegetative growth, so perhaps you could expand on that a little.
By the way robbyc -- have you considered becoming a member of our site? I'm sure you would be satisfied over the long run. Even though this is a new site, there is a very good depth of field of knowledge and experience here amongst the administrators and mods. Take the plunge and join us!! I'm sure down the road you will be glad you did. Heck, we may even have raffles or who knows what for members only.
Take care - Murph

hey murph..
thanks for the quick responses, i appreciate this very much. ok this is pretty much my idea right now. im wana germinate the seeds i have(i dont know how to do that), and i want to plant a single plant in soil. i also want to buy a grow light. i heard floresent lights work good and they dont produce alot of heat(i really dont wana burndown my dorm room). thats pretty much it, im not one for big ideas, but is that possible. i have a really nice place in my closet where i could put the plant and the light. i got these seeds from some buds i smoked a while ago. are they any good to plant.i also was thinking of buying seeds over the internet, but im not sure if i really trust any web sites after hearing many of the horror stories.
where i live and go to school, growing marijuana, smoking marijuana and any marijuana related activities are illegal. which really sucks for me cause im a prime suspect for indulging in what nature has to offer. i would just like to grow my own single plant to harvest a few times for personal use. and because im a poor university student , i really dont have that much money to spend on products. so im gonna have to improvise on a few things. nothing duct tape cant fix.
well thank u very much, and i would like to hear some of your ideas. thanks murph

Good Morning Robbyc,
First, congrats on joining. I'm sure you will not regret your decision. We are here to help, and that we will try our best to do!! Go easy on me, I'm old and gray!! Actually, just old and bald!!
First, the way I germinate my seeds is to place them between paper towels. I take one paper towel and fold it until it's about ~3" square. Do the same with another. Then I rob my wife's kitchen and get two small plates of the same size. Moisten, don't soak, the towels and place your seeds between the two towels. Then, put the towels on the one plate, and put the other plate upside down on top of the first plate. I use a little tape to make sure they don't slide apart. I usually put that whole contraption on either my router or modem for a little warmth. I've had good seeds, from a reputable vendor like http://www.marijuana-seeds.net/ sprout in as little as 24 hrs. It's amazing!! You can then carefully place the seedling into your media making sure to have the "root" aiming down. Let the plant get going under the fluoros (1 - 2 inches above seedling) until the first few leaves have become well formed, then you can use a very dilute sol'n of the fert. you plan on using and water sparingly. Don't use it full strength yet!! You can burn the delicate seedling. Remember that seeds from buds generally won't germinate because they weren't in the presence of a male plant. You may get one or two to go possibly.
Fluoros will work fine the way you are talking. It would be better if you could find a small Metal Halide, but I understand the problem with a dorm room. I don't even remember closets in my dorm!! (Told you I was old). Marpassion made a post talking about using fluoros and I'll try to find the exact thread it was in if you can't find it.
Hope this helps -- keep asking questions and reading -- it's the best way to learn -- Murph

Hi Robbyc
I use a cheap set-up and get a good yeild. Buy 2 undercounter floresent lights from Wal-mart of such about $6.99 each, and a campers emergency blanket made of aluminum polyethylene around $1.69. Use a corner and mount a light on both walls that make the V of the corner, place a little fan you can find at a yard sale and your set. I germinate my seeds in a dark place using a wet paper towel, then plan in potting soil. I leave the lights on for 24 hours the first month or so, then 12 on, 12 off. The plants do give off an odor so hope you are prepared for that with you living in a dorm. Good luck and hope to see some pics posted sometime.

hello everyone,
guys i dont know what to say, i thank u very much for helping me out in my little project. when i get everything up and running im definatly gonna post some pics to show u all. once again i wana thank marpassion, murphy and sirius1953 for all your help. i couldnt of done this on my own. another thing is, ive considered buying some seeds from a web site, but im not 100 percent sure on authenticity. i prefer to buy seeds from a canadian company but if there are anytrusted sites besides the one mentioned earlier, can u list them so i can take a look.
and is it true, for only 10 seeds, one must pay about 35-45 USD, cause that kinda expensive.
and another thing, i only wana grow one plant, so how many seed do u think i have to germinate at a time. to get alteast one female plant.
thank u very much

HI Meta,
Hope you don't mind if I shortened your name. I've been typing so much lately, I'm getting lazy!!
Each variety or strain has different growth characteristics. At first you will see what I call the primordal (cotyledons) leaves. They don't even look like Cannabis leaves. Then after a few days you will see the first small leaves coming from between the two baby leaves. Then you will see the leaf shape forming that you are anxiously looking for, at least I was when I started!! Once again, each plant will have a different growth rate. Just avoid the temptation to over fertilize thinking you can make the plant grow faster - you will only make problems for yourself.
What are you putting your sprouts in after germination? What kind of lighting? If you have already mentioned this, please forgive me for being redundant. Tell us how you are doing things and we can give you more help -- Regards from Murph and thanks for being a part of our forum.

whats up hemp_man....i'm a beginner myself, so i wouldn't take my advice to heart but what i would question about your plant(s) not growin is perhaps the size of container or amount of soil-which gives the roots their room....dont know for sure tho...do let me know if u solve the situation...good luck bro.....and hey, how many watts u shinin'? and what type? that too could be a factor to ponder...
...and for MURPHY OR MARPASSION...or anybody else...
...i was wondering if its good or bad to spray soak a plant with water before cuttin the lights out for dark time during the veg period????....u guys are great, lets keep this forum sick...

| i was in the same position as you, i thought it was odd how much the plant grew the first 3 or 4 weeks then all of a sudden seemingly just stop. i think its normal really, even though i havent successfully grown indoors. ive been pruning mine now, since the huge leaves block the light to all the little ones below, i find it makes it more wider and bushier.

The problem is that you need to start the 12 12 cycle the plant has stoppet growing because its ready to flower

just trying to figure out why ppl are so impatient.... ppl don't spend there entire time on this site just to give ppl there direct attention it may take some time to reply... sorry i just get annoyed when ppl are impatient for a reply... so how are they going to be patient enough for there plants to grow and fully mature? but here are a few of my tid bits... the way i found to germinate really easily is to get about a 4-5in deep container size of width and length depending on the number of plants you plan on having... and then put your seeds in your planting medium... and then wrap the container with suran wrap... not sure on spelling... this suran wrap is to keep it humid inside the container then in about 2-3 days depending on the health of the seed you will already see sprouts... and try and keep your flouros... or light source as close to the plants as to not burn them... b/c that is bad once your seeds sprout you can plants them in your larger containers... i use a 10in in diameter pot and about 8in deep... this is my first time growing but i can't wait to see how my plants turn out... i also have 2 six in circular fans blowing on them as to strengthen the stems... stronger stems euqal bigger buds... i also have a humidifier running helps increase plant life... the lights that i use are 4 48in tube flouros... i have 7 of plants as of now.. waiting 9 more days before i begin the flowing cycle... i hope all of this info helped someone... peace out ..//decepter\.. oh and wish me luck for the last phase of my growing
