Law enforcement officers arrested two people and seized more than 200 marijuana plants Tuesday at a West Duluth home. A third person was arrested later.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, officers executed a search warrant around 6 p.m. at 226 South 56th Avenue West after receiving a tip of a marijuana-growing operation. Officers found several growing rooms equipped with shelves and grow lights and more than 200 plants in various stages of growth, including some already harvested and curing.

“They had a pretty good, pretty intricate operation there which is still under investigation,” St. Louis County Sheriff’s Investigator Brent Donahue said.

The plants have an estimated street value of more than $80,000. Investigators also found evidence of methamphetamine use.

A woman, 29, was taken into custody as she came out of the house before the warrant was executed. A 57-year-old man was arrested inside the house. Another man, 30, was arrested later. All three are being held at the St. Louis County Jail pending formal charges. The older man has a criminal history, Donahue said.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Donahue declined to say exactly what led authorities to the three suspects and their residence.

“They, the people who were arrested, have been linked to other investigations,” he said. “That’s how we came upon them.”

The case remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Criminal Investigative Division at (218) 336-4350.

Donahue said authorities are seeing more indoor and outdoor pot-growing operations. On Nov. 11, Thorsten Gorham Otterness of Side Lake pleaded guilty in federal court in Duluth to growing more than 1,000 marijuana plants on his property from last summer to Sept. 10, when the marijuana was spotted from the air.

On Nov. 5, two Hermantown men, Michael Larry King, 22, and Matthew Daniel Blank, 22, were arraigned in connection with a 363-plant marijuana-growing operation at the men’s residence at 3669 Haines Rd. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team had executed a narcotics search warrant at the residence on Nov. 3.

In February, Grand Rapids Police and the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office found 137 marijuana plants growing in a Cohasset residence.

Authorities say that sophisticated indoor pot-growing operations are a growing national trend. This summer authorities in the Twin Cities charged 18 people in federal court after raids netted more than 3,300 marijuana plants from six locations. The street value of the marijuana was estimated at $6 million.
