i got 3 hashplants and 1 hemp starr.they are under 1 1000 watt hps my room is 6hx6lx3w got a 400 cfm squarel cage design fan.and my intake is a 6 inch 12vdc 4500 rpm fan.the 2 big ones are 30 iches and the 2 smaller ones are 24 iches.my temps are in the mid 80s trying to get it cooler though but 1000 watts get hot. its in a aircooled hood still vegging. thinking of budding shortly.any tips let me know

Hi,

Your plants look nice and beefy! Temps do sound on the high side and I don't think your squirrel cage fan will be able to pull enough air at static pressure to make much of a dent in your heat situation. I've been growing for a little over 15 years and I started with squirrel cage fans but they never worked for me in rooms with HID lights. Even a good inline fan rated at 400cfm would move a lot more air for you than a squirrel cage fan rated the same. From my limited understanding Sq cage fans don't do well in a room with static pressure.

A few years ago when I first grew in my closet (2 x 4 x 8) I tried using 4" duct with the strong inline fan I use now - an Eclipse/Ostberg 630cfm high output fan with an air cooled 600w hps and that didn't quite get temps below 80 without having the closet door open a few inches. I had to use 4" to 6" reducers to adapt between the fan, lights and ductwork so that may have slowed down air movement a good deal. I eventually stopped growing in that closet due to roomie situations, etc. and recently I was able to fire up the closet again but with some new gear.

I now use a Quantum 1K ballast with a dual arc HID in a 6" cool tube style reflector, 6" semi rigid duct and an Eclipse 630cfm inline fan. I also have a 40 lb. can carbon filter mounted high in my closet and I have that before the lights in the ventilation chain. Even with the carbon filter placed before the cool tube reflector in the ventilation chain, this fan pulls plenty of heat off the lights and cool air into the closet through a passive intake and the cracks in the door to keep temps 2-4º above the ambient temps in the room the closet is in. I have a window A/C and I keep it at 72º and it stays a consistent 74º - 77º in my closet. In addition to the 6" fan and ducting being a big part of my solution, I think the cool tube style reflector has made a huge difference too. My reflector hood stays much cooler now that so much air is constantly pulling heat off my 1K.

I'd suggest switching to 12/12 ASAP as your Hemp Star could be getting too big for the height space you have available. Is the Hemp Star one of the plants at 30" or 24"? Since the Hash plants are very Indica they'll probably top out between 4 -5' in height during flowering which is cool but the Hemp Star may be a different animal depending on how much sativa is in your pheno. I had a buddy who had to really tie a Hemp Star down to keep it under the lights so you may want get started before long. It did turn out to be some mighty fine smoke though... Excellent NL/Haze lineage... How could you go wrong?

Good Luck!

well i got a inlinline fan thismorning it rated at 500 cfm hopefully it does the job but the only thing im puzzled about is the square end that it pushes the air threw. i dont know what to get to make it be able to vent out with any sugestions would be great and the hempstarr is 24 inches. my previous grows i started to flower when they were over 12 inches this time i want maxium yeild i had a 250 hps and 5 led pannels then but know i got my 1000 watt switchable ballast. my bulb has a lummen output of 140000 got my intakes and exhaust hooked up no i am goin to cool my hood seperate i was venting the whole room threw it. i am giving them hydroponic food but there in dirt they seem to love it.

Well the ladies certainly look good. Nice work so far. Keep us posted with what you decide to do. I would definitely consider flowering them pretty soon. Just my thoughts. Keep us posted. Take care and be safe.

well i put them under for 12 12 know so hopefully in the next 2 months you goin to see some bud porn

well its been 10 days know almost and alot happened. first i foilare fed with just water a hour before my lights came on and the one wasnt compltly driedgot a few damaged leaves but she still going strong. the other 3 are doin great the hemp star has almost caught up with the hashplants . the only other prob i got is my temps i was in th 96 to 97 range ambitent now im at 86 to 88 goin to hook up a 4 inch intake from outside the house to see if it helps. but if it dont goin with portable ac unit.

OUCH! that's still pretty warm. Unfortunately, to get a space that small in the 70's might very well require a different setup. I posted lots of my thoughts on squirrel cage fans and cool tubes... It's nearly impossible to get things cool enough without air cooled lights and the smaller the space the more the air cooled design needs to be of the "cool tube" type. Your gals look pretty good but at harvest time you'll notice the effects of the heat.

Taking cool air from outside then passing it through lights is ment to be most effective although even here in the UK i've had to bite the bullet and buy a huge fan, hoods, A/C the lot lol :p

Yup... biting the bullet seems inevitable if you're after dankness... ;) It's SO hot and humid around here the last week or so that pulling air from outside even at night wouldn't be good for the bulb with all the moisture in the air. Last night the low was 77º (25C) and the dew point is ridiculous... I stepped outside last night to smoke one on my patio and I was sweating just sitting there... instantly! A/C is the only solution... I can't wait to see my power bill next month although last month it added only $70 to my overall bill compared to last year without my grow closet going.

Good Luck!

Hi,

What's going on with your squirrel cage fan in the picture? Are you exhausting air from the floor? It's going to help a lot if you pull air from the top of the room. And what's with the bucket and all the duct tape and the wacky setup? You'll want to i.e. mount that on some type of board and attach some type of duct flange on it so you can hook up your duct more efficiently. Is it just sitting on the bucket? The air comes out of the bottom of the fan in the pic, right? Is the bucket somehow part of your duct adapting? You really need to re think this... If you scrap that setup and set the gear up properly you might get your temps much closer to 80 at least...

I see quite a few nute burned leaves. Go *easy* on your nutes! Less IS more! It took me years to figure out the less strength I use in the nutes the happier they get...

Peace!

well i took your advise i put the blower on the celing. and its just sitting on the bucket the tape is holding my flange in plasce had alot of air escaping . but goin to fix that with aluminum tape this week
