If in flowering like 3 or 4 inches away and if in veg. like 1.5 -2 feet

15" is ideal for a 400 watter.

Well IMHO it really depends on what type of refector you have, what type of ventilation and temps, space, etc...a 400 watt HPS with no shield or flow thru venting could fry your plants at 3-4 inces away...as they say if you put your hand under the light and it feels hot on the back of your hand its too close...same goes for the tops of plants...exile I dont know where you got that info, I am pretty sure 3-4 inches for any HID light is too close regardless of setup...Peace Out and GG
