A Southwest Airlines passenger forced a flight to land after smoking in one of the plane's bathrooms.

Flight 1250 was traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles but diverted to San Jose Mineta International Airport after a passenger allegedly smoked in the lavatory, Southwest Airlines told Business Insider in a statement. The airline said the passenger was met by law enforcement and turned over to local authorities after the flight landed.

The passenger was not arrested, the San Jose Police Department told Business Insider.

A prior version of this story cited reports that the substance the Southwest passenger smoked was marijuana, but the San Jose Police Department told Business Insider those reports were inaccurate.

What a waste of time, money, and resources.

And why does a plane have to land if someone smokes in the bathroom?

SF to LA is only like a hour flight. This guy must have lit up as soon as they got in the air. They landed in San Jose which is a little South of San Francisco.
They should have continued on to LA since they would have been air only about an hour, The passenger in the bathroom could have waited to get to LA to light up. But why would this be cause to for an emergency landing? Hundreds of other passengers had to sit in San Jose while this person was removed from the flight..

I can see an emergency landing for a violent person or plane problems..

Do they do this when a person lights up a cigarette in the bathroom while in flight?

Some one freaked out. Even if they were blowing massive clouds from a vape pen this shouldn't have caused an emergency landing. Cost the airline thousands of dollars to do this plus whatever the passengers could claim. For nothing, they didn't even charge or arrest the guy. That pilot should be trained not to freak out.
