About 1.5 weeks into flowering i was talking to friend and he said that you have got to put your plants in 36 hours of pure darkness before flowering, apparently this sets them into the flowering cycle.. i have heard this before but forgot to do it.... is my yeild going to suffer because of this?

No. It's purely optional, and some believe it a myth.
