I currently have a 400W globe in a 400W ballast. Will a 600W globe fit in it, and work properly ??? Thanx for any advice....OR, do I need to get a 600W ballast ??

You can run a 600w bulb in a 400w ballast and it will fire and put out 400w of light but the spectrum will be compromised.

That's absolutely correct. Ppl have lost their homes due to grow room fires caused by HPS problems.

I go to bed every night and the last thing I do is check to make everything is alright in the grow. I still worry something will go haywire while I am sleeping. I wouldn't sleep at all knowing my equipment wasn't right. I would get the same feeling if I left my grill on overnight.......
