My husband's niece works in an M.D.'s office. She said that marijuang may be my husband's problem. He is on Kidney dialysis. He has a graft in his arm. He smokes a lot of marijuana daily. Uniquely, he has been having a hard time with blood clotting in his arm which requires surgery. This has happened 4X. I've understood that m.j. speeds up your heart and blood pressure....not slowing it. Is that a problem?

This is something you REALLY need to ask the DOCTORS and not a bunch of heads.

IMO is the higher blood pressure dislodges the clots before they can completely shut off the blood flow. So they never completely form enough to do the job right. I do know for fact you can cough and dislodge blood clots and cause major problems.

That is normal for diabetics and people that had heart surgery or on dialysis.

It is related to his diabetes not the marijuana. in my unprofessional non-medical background. My mom has diabetes and I give herb to a person that suffers muscular atrophy from diabetes.

This is a question for a specialist not a nurse. Dialysis puts a beating on the system.

I agree talk to a doctor not a nurse.

I myself take medicine that inhibits clots. Many people do who have heart problems. I have my platelets checked by a lab every six weeks or so, to monitor the meds.

The Clotting that happens in the body is caused by platelets that are made in the bone marrow along with the blood. There can be various reasons that the bone marrow is not producing enough platelets.

There is also the diet that will produce more or less clotting. A diet rich in dark green vedgies, is high in Vitamin K. Vitamin K will cause blood to clot. It is used as an emergency clotting agent in people like me who take blood thinners for their health. Also, cranberry juice promotes clotting and I have no idea why, it is on the list of things I am not supposed to consume as a user of blood thinning meds.

These things are for your information only. I in no way am recommending anything concerning Medical Advise. Your Uncle's doctors are aware of these things.

Good luck to you and good thoughts to your Uncle.

If it didn't come from an MD then you need to take it with a very large grain of salt.

The niece might have heard 3rd hand about the 2007 study from South Africa which (they thought) showed that really fat rats might have an impact on their production of anticoagulant. But no one verified the study, nobody else came up with the same result, and it was a study done on fat rats (as opposed to skinny rats) - not humans.

Other studies have shown no impact of marijuana in conjuction with Warfarin and Coumadin (aside from ONE isolated case), which is pretty telling. Others say you get a lot higher when smoking weed while on Warfarin.

Some starting links would be:
