I planted my seeds on 3-01 -14 an they shot up like field corn. An I planted a seed in a 5gal. Bucket an it is only 14 inches tall an built like the Hulk.PERFECT. So I had 10 plants that are reaching for the heavens, so I dug one up an the little pellet that it was started in is only 1inch square in size had all the roots in it. They all were getting choked out.So I pulled all of them and remove the pellet an replanted in buckets, an half in my garden. I will try to grow them side ways. Will keep posted
 
That is another reason why I don't like the peat pellets. I use either just coco coir or the rooter cubes that you can order.
 
x 2. ... you can gently pull the membrane apart and peel it off if you want. Then replant. If they are leggy- plant sideways like you said but only a few days after pulling all the lower foilage off and letting it heal.
