Does maturity make a difference in the quality of your smoke?

The reason I am asking this is last night a friend just finished his cure with a mother plant he has been using for a very long time. He said it was the best smoke he has ever grown. I really am not sure I buy into this or not, but I could be completely wrong. So, I am throwing this out there to more experienced growers than myself. I will use two pictures of mine of the same plants but different age. One is the mother plant at least three times as old as the group of smaller plants. These are purple haze if it makes any difference.

I have grown out mother's before and don't remember any difference. If I remember right mother's produce mostly popcorn buds because they have been topped so many times.
