“When you smoke marijuana, it’s like opening your computer up and pouring water inside,” said Dr. Phil.

Unlicensed television psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw claimed on an episode of his talk show last week that cannabis use can make people violent and cause a drop in IQ scores. McGraw made his claims during a segment about an 11-year-old boy named JJ whose mother sought advice to help control his violent and destructive outbursts on the show Dr. Phil.

Video clips and a voice-over depict JJ as a disturbed boy with a history of violence, including hitting his mother and threatening her with a kitchen knife. JJ’s mom also describes finding photos of him holding a gun and exhaling smoke. Another photograph showed the boy smoking what appears to be a blunt.

After the video clip introducing JJ and his mother, McGraw says that JJ is smoking pot to self-medicate his anxiety, adding that he doesn’t believe cannabis use by children is a wise choice while betraying his own bias on the issue.

“Smoking marijuana at 10 years of age, not a good idea,” McGraw says. “Not a good idea at 11 or 12 or 13. I don’t think it’s a good idea period.”

Dr. Phil Makes Unfounded Claims About Pot

Then McGraw makes a wild assertion with no basis in fact, saying his claims are backed by research but conveniently failing to cite it.

“When you smoke marijuana, it’s like opening your computer up and pouring water inside,” McGraw declares. “A lot of things short out and it connects where it’s not supposed to and really creates problems. And this isn’t my opinion, this is hard, solid scientific research.”

David Juurlink, the head of clinical pharmacology and toxicology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, tells Vice that “it’s ludicrous to equate smoking cannabis with pouring water on a computer.”

While cannabis use does have some risks, he adds, the idea that pot can cause permanent damage is sensationalism.

“Maybe Dr. Phil should redirect hyperbole to alcohol, tobacco, opioids, and benzos, all of which are considerably more harmful, as is exploiting your troubled preteen on national television,” Juurlink says.

After making his unsupported claims about cannabis’ supposed harm to brains, McGraw makes more unsubstantiated proclamations about the effects of weed, saying that it lowers intelligence and motivation.

“Even occasional marijuana smokers will look at a multi-point drop in IQ, even with just occasional use, like once a week or two or three times a month, you’ll see IQ drop and motivational drop across time. It changes your brain,” says McGraw.

No License to Practice Psychology

While McGraw has no credentials that qualify him as an expert on cannabis or its effects, he has earned a master’s degree in experimental psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas. However, he is not licensed to practice psychology in any state.

His license to practice psychology in Texas was voluntarily surrendered in 2006. In 1989, he was reprimanded by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists for having an inappropriate non-physical relationship with a patient. McGraw first came into prominence by appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the 1990s.

He is just speaking for himself....and just because it makes Mr Phil slow does not mean it makes others slow. Please show us this "solid scientific research"...and I think a few folks here would love to give your IQ test a run ....while stoned. Same reason there is no standard for drugged driving from cannabis...the "solid scientific research" must be failing them again.

How many logical fallacies can we spot in one argument?
I see the argument from authority fallacy when he says "hard solid scientific research".
False Analogy when he compares marijuana with pouring water on a computer.

My opinion is that doctor phil is a showman, not a doctor. And i doubt he does his research.
Although i agree that young kids shouldn't smoke, he is taking the rest of his facts out of his ass.

Well. I'm glad we have a "doctor's" professional opinion in this now, huh? /s
The actual LICENSED MDs, including my own primary, I know are of the opposite opinion and all agree on certain points that have come up in discussion:
-it's way safer than Ambien etc for sleep disorders
-it's faster acting and highly effective for anxiety disorders and can lessen or eliminate the need for addictive psych meds, or reduce the effective dose
And this is just the stuff we've actually chatted about. The fact that it's medically legal and well regarded as an alternative therapy for other stuff doesn't cross his radar? Does he think chiropractors and acupuncturists are quacks too?
As someone who has used prescription daily dose antianxiety meds in the past, before I started smoking devil's lettuce, I can say that the meds turned me into a couch potato with a permanent brain cloud, and when I switched to evening medibles for sleep and as-needed bong rips for Things That Stress Me Out.... The cobwebs cleared and I'm much happier and well rested. Personal anecdotal experience of course, but IMVHO "dr" Phil doesn't have any statistically significant study group to make his claims off, either.
He should come read the boards here and be forced to admit that there are plenty of highly intelligent, high functioning, professional, articulate potheads roaming the planet.
Violent?! Hah okay dude. I mean, don't take away my nachos and we won't have any problems... but seriously?!
He needs to:
- stop calling himself a doctor and admit that he's nothing more than a balder and less entertaining version of Jerry Springer with equally trashy storylines that exist solely to sell advertising for the network who owns his immortal soul
- go sit on a tack.

Not in my life they aren't. I worked for a well-respected chiro as an x-ray tech for 20 years. I also have used acupuncture, it works. It is how I stopped smoking cigarettes. Don't be bad mouthing all of them for a few bad ones.

They may work for some people in certain circumstances. Not for the reasons the practitioners claim.

I started seeing a chiro after dislocating 2 ribs in a ski accident with no health insurance (both ironic and stupid, I know). Turned out to be a good call. Now I always give her first dibs on fixing random back stuff, and so far she's on an unbeaten streak : )
In a alternative medicine crossover event , she actually encourages me to have a puff or three before a session as added relaxation. Yet another useful benefit of grass!

I get so angry after smoking weed I....hey look, there's a squirrel. Uh, what were we talking about? I love you, man...
