My first attempt was truly a FIM moment. I was simply trying to top a small plant.

My second attempt when TRYING to do it didnt work out as well. It ended up just being topped.

So, only time will tell...you'll know pretty quickly though by the new growth.

So even if I didn’t perfectly get the fim the alternative result is a topping? Not just grow back?

Correct. You will either end up with a straight topping and get 2 new "arms", or the fim will work and you will get 2+n new arms. A single replacement shoot that just keeps continuing straight up like the rest of the plant is not an option.
It's cool, even if you get 2 you can pinch each of them after a couple nodes and end up with 4. It's how I manage my plants from seed to turn them into productive mothers.

Great thanks for the help. She’s an auto so I may do some light lst, but that’s it for hst.

Fimming is hard to do and get it right. The good part is that a missed fim is a topping, so all is well. Go for it, you can't lose.

Agreed with everybody above. Topping is better then not topping. Fimming even better but as Stinkattic said you can always top again in two places,,but not on an Auto. It only has so much juice and time to grow.

I personally would not recommend topping or fimming an auto at all. It can take a photoperiod plant several weeks to recover from fimming or topping. You do not want to lose this much "grow time" with an auto.

Any one have a pic of a successful fim? My girlfriend just fim'd her plant, but not sure what we will get.
I actually did another cut further down. Saw a pic of a dude that went too high and it effectively looked like cut around the center on the leaves. First pic is the second cut and the next is 3 days later. Got a bunch of interesting things going on. I’ll update if anyone’s interested.
