OK, a friend's wife is living with debilitating arthritis in the hands, her fingers just claw up something sickening and she's in terrible pain much of the time. I am at my limit for patients, so I am going to set the guy up with his own room, teach him how to grow and even do a lot of hands-on....it's just sooo sad to see this. I figure the guy can get his wife into the garden when she's in good health, might be beneficial as well...

What would be a good strain or two to help with this problem? I have sent home a few sample which have helped, but would rather get her set up with something that'll be smooth for her, yet effective! I am taking her some of my OG Kush and my vaporizer tomorrow, figure she'll need that more than I and hope the OG cuts the pain some. She's a non-smoker, only tried a few joints I have given her, so it really needs to be smooth....

Suggestions??

I also have quite severe arthritis in my hands. I find that virtually all strains give me relief from the pain in my hands (and knees). Does she want this for daytime or nightime relief or both?

I am a big Satori fan. I have a Satori/Dynamite cross that I got from a friend of a friend that I really like and am going to keep going as long as I can clone clones. I am using Aurora Indica as a nighttime smoke, but have recently started some Larry's OG (looking for something to really put me down at night). I also really like hash at night. Bubble hash is just the greatest. I threw trim away for decades before I discovered bubble hash--something incredibly wonderful from what used to be garbage.

And hey, there are far worse things than arthritis. I have friends going through chemo--that makes arthritis seem like a bout with the flu.

My dad died of cancer, I know what you mean with the chemo! :( Unfortunately, the arthritis is so bad, this 50 yr old is contemplating the end...anything I can do to help her ease the pain would be awesome!

I wish I had ordered some Larry, will definitely look into the satori!! THANKS!!!

I guess I really kinda knew this answer, if I had just given thought! The arthritis in my back is helped by a ride range of strains (all I've grown, pretty much lmao), so should be same for her hands! I'm taking her my vaporizer today, along with the OG.....

That is nice you are doing that Roddy. I feel I need to say this, and i am not sure why, but don't you care more then they do. Make sure they want the grow room. It would be hard to set up something for someone and they don't use it or don't have the interest to really learn about this stuff. I think it is great you are helping them. I agree w/ THG, they all help. My favorite, which i fear is clone only is Medicine woman to take me to sleep. Good luck Roddy.

I don't know about anyone else. but if I am in debilitating pain and am contemplating the end.. even being in recovery. I would be quick to see a pain manangment clinic and would'nt hesitate to take a narcotic rather than suffer. With the range of anelgesics on the market to control pain. IMHO no one needs suffer like that.. Hero

I will be watching this thread.

My Dad has it so bad, his ankles, knees and hands swell to twice the normal size, he has tried everything available, currently they have him getting blood transfussions.

He once said to me, "I would trade 15 yrs of my life for 1 or 2 yrs pain free, its heart breaking.

hope your friend finds what she needs.

After years of dealing with it, seeing every "specialist" there is, using drugs that make us sicker than better....she's tried it all, trust me!

I talked to my friend and we went in depth on how it all works, he is a go! I definitely wouldn't push it on anyone, it's more work than fun lol, but I am more than happy to help if it'll lessen the pain! I figure one small closet, some clones and a few gadgets and they're in business, I imagine the work around the house with plants will be soothing to her as well as beneficial in the end lol!

THANKS Rosie!

It does nothing for my Dads pain or my wifes chronic back pain.

not knocking anyone it helps, just saying.

It definitely doesn't affect everyone the same way, same with any treatment! I can take morphine and party where others sleep...

There are numorous narcotic analgesics on the market today and many Doctors are somewhat hesitent to perscribe them in fear of creating addiction but I will tell you that if I was in severe pain even thou I am in recovery from addiction to things like this.. I would be the first in line at the pain clinic.. Not everyone becomes addicted to narcotics. only if taken for long periods of time and around the clock.. Addicts like to medicate like that but not everyone does that and that is where narcotics can be very helpfull.. I had all of my teeth ( porclen crowns ) all of them done back 7 or so years ago over a period of 3 months and I was in pain but it wasnt so severe that non narcotic drugs like ultram didnt help me.. Both my Doctor ( GP) and my Dentist know I am in recovery and cannot take things like controlled substances but If I am in pain.. pain that makes me miserable.. I would find someone to write me what I needed.. and then if I was in irretractable pain such as cancer ect I would choose a narcotic with a higher ceiling and long half life such as methadone. in smaller dose's . Just my opinion Hero

I would like some verification (or hell no's) from some of the more experienced here but I am working with my brother who has metastatic adenocarcinoma so management of pain has been a big factor in our lives over the last year and a half. One of the providers we had (a seemingly knowledgeable fellow) mentioned to us that the medicinal value in MJ is found more in the CBD's, CBN's than in the THC. He said that, in general the more THC the less CBD/CBN and vica versa (need verification). I take it with that that you may want to look for strains high in CBD's and CBN's and low in THC but more specifically for pain he mentioned to stick with the purples. Three he mentioned were Purple Kush, Northern Lights, and Lavender.

I can't tell you anything about the knockout effect, daytime/nightime benefit, etc.. as I dont' use MJ but I was very keen on the different strains my brother used. He definetly liked the Purple Kush (Grand Daddy Purple I think it's called) and the Northern Lights. We have yet to try the Lavender as that has not matured yet. I must say that no MJ really eliminated all the pain but took the edge off and alleviated some of the nasty side effects associated with prescription opiates but then he has cancer pretty much all throughout his body.

Anyhow, I'm just passing along to you some of the information we were working under given my limited experience with MJ and my brothers extensive experience. If anyone can refute this, I will not be offended at all.

Since we are talking about non MJ alternatives I will pass on to you my experiences with my brother. First most all the opiates (Loritabs, Oxycontin, Dilaudid, etc..) are addictive by nature. Another word for addictive is tolerance. Your body builds tolerance to the drug and processes it easier overtime requiring ever increasing dosages. It's the nature of the beast. I had only one honest doctor in the lot that gave us the hard answer we needed to hear given that. That is at times all you can do is manage the pain to a tolerable level and in those times the only thing you can do to completely eliminate pain is anesthesia (think Michael Jackson) which is not advisable. The most important thing is that over continued use the benefits of opiates are on a downward sliding scale and the negative side effects are always upward rising so that in the end the negatives far outweigh the positives. Our experience confirmed this. Anyhow, it's a viscious cycle that I would only recommend for someone with a terminal illness. For something long term such as arthritis I think you may run the course with opiates and be left with nothing but misery.

With that I will go through the rounds of what we did. The docs first prescribed Loritabs (hydrocodone). My brother quickly became addicted to those. At the end of the day he was taking 16 pills a day and still feeling miserable plus the side effects. That was over a four month period. After that we began using MJ and for a time we were completely off the pain meds. As the cancer progressed, however, in the last few months had to have the pain meds. He was prescribed dilaudid (hydromorphone) which is very powerful and addictive stuff. He hasn't had time to form an addiction but also the combined use of MJ and opiate seemed to keep the addiction of opiate at bay. Later we tried a new opiate, nucynta, which is as powerful as dilaudid but with a longer half life. My brother liked that the best but as I said the MJ seemed to help a ton (not only with the pain but with the opiate side effects).

For the arthritis specific pain, because it is more long term I would limit my use of opiates and really avoid altogether if possible. I would aggressively fight with things such as MJ and natural remedies for as long as I could manage. If you believe anything about an alkaline diet, I would look into that to control the progression of the arthritis. The theory behind it is that an overly acid forming diet results in the body pulling minerals and other essentials from all parts of the body to buffer the acid and maintain a very tight PH range of 7.35 to 7.45. This means calcium from the bones, etc.. resutling in most of the degenerative diseases such as arthritis, gout, cancer, etc... For my brother once he was diagnosed we completely changed his diet (to the extent I could get him to) and it substantially improved his overall well being. We used things such as ginger tea, more alkalizing foods, etc... The first thing we noticed was complete elimination of his chronic heartburn which was the likely cause of his cancer in the first place. Hey, if PH is important for MJ, why wouldn't it be important for humans?

Anyhow, there is no love lost btn me and the pharmas and has been my experience that once in their grasp it becomes a downward spiral resulting in an ever shifting potpourri of pills. Currently, my brother is in the hospital and I fight this everday. He gets dilaudid for pain, Adavan for sleep and then they tried to give him a stimulant to counter the Adavan. This is after getting C-diff (a hospital born stomach virus) because of their overuse of anti-biotics. I lost it at that point, fired one doctor, dropped the Adavan and the stimulant, and he is currently only on the dilaudid for pain and doing fine.

Finally, I'm not certain this is the right topic for general indoor growing forum but it is an important topic anyhow. If wrong place, I'm sorry to all.
