How to Apply Neem Oil/Insecticidal Soap?

Hi guys I bought some Natria neem oil and Garden Safe insecticidal soap a few weeks ago, and after applying each on separate occasions, they burned the leaves of my plant. The plant is doing a bit better now, but the damage was rather extensive and I had to do a lot of defoliating of dead leaves and waiting for the plant to recover, which has set me back a week or two before switching to flower. I made sure not to spray in direct sunlight and I waited 45 minutes after applying the insecticidal soap and 2 hours when I applied the neem oil before turning the lights back on. Any advice is appreciated.
