GRESHAM, Ore. - Police here are calling it a "marijuana factory" - one of the largest grow operations they have ever seen.
They discovered it in a rental home at 1751 N.W. 13th St. after serving a search warrant there Wednesday.
The property owner told KATU News he was stunned to learn what was there.
A multi-agency investigations unit found at least five rooms dedicated to growing or manufacturing pot, including a room for the mother plants and a drying room for harvested product. There was a very extensive feeding, watering and power system along with several hundred immature marijuana plants growing, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said.
Equipment included filters designed to soak up the smell that might normally come from such an operation. The home was also wired to steal electricity and hide what authorities said was a marijuana production line. There was even a posted schedule for watering, fertilizing and checking on the plants.
Authorities arrested 28-year-old Huy Dang Truong on suspicion of possession, manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
Investigators said Truong admitted being unemployed yet paying $2,800 a month in rent.
They believe marijuana had been growing in the home since last June. If fully operational, such a marijuana factory could produce 100 to 200 pounds of product every three or four months, the sheriff's office said.
Considering that the street value of a pound of marijuana is $3,000 to $3,500, investigators believe the operation was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Authorities expect to make more arrests as part of the investigation.
