I've been planning on keeping a motherplant to take clones from but am a bit uncertain what sort of lighting I'm going to need in order to keep it alive.
Will I have to get a new HPS 400W or is there something more usefull and effective?

Whats up Witness. IMO you can keep a mother plant alive with just some compact flourescent lights.

yea fluros are your best bet. remember the plant isn't going to have to be very big. keep taking clones and store then in your fridge for up to a month. keep the plant small and you won't need much light at all...

You will still want 3,000 lumens per sq. ft. min. to keep it healthy and producing clones well.
