Pepsi looks to join Coca-Cola in creating marijuana-infused drinks
By Oscar Pascual on October 2, 2018
PepsiCo hopes to be the next soda baron to look into making beverages containing cannabis.
The giant soft drink company’s chief financial officer, Hugh Johnston, hinted at creating marijuana-infused beverages in a recent interview with CNBC, according to an AFP report.
“We will look at it very critically,” Johnston said in the CNBC interview.”But I am not prepared to share any plans that we may have in the space right now.”
Johnston’s comments come weeks after nemesis Coca-Cola expressed interest in creating wellness drinks containing CBD. Pepsi would likely do the same, rather than looking into a beverage containing the psychoactive compound THC.
“We are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world,” Coca-Cola spokesman Kent Landers told Bloomberg News. “The space is evolving quickly. No decisions have been made at this time.”
Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo join a handful of alcoholic beverage companies looking to incorporate legal cannabis into its products, including the businesses that own Corona and Blue Moon beer, respectively.
