As the two community support officers watched the front, dozens of plants were being put into bin liners and loaded into a van out the back.

A neighbour saw what was going on and called police, who arrived too late to prevent about £15,000-worth of plants being taken. An investigation into the blunder has begun.

A police insider said: ‘Everyone was chuffed with busting the huge factory and there was a blaze of publicity about it.

‘There was such a lot of cannabis inside, we had to bring in council experts to dispose of it. While we were waiting for that to happen, the thieves broke in through the back.’

Police seized about 1,000 cannabis plants, worth £300,000, in a former nightclub at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. Four Vietnamese men, aged 17 to 48, were arrested at the scene. South Wales Police admitted an internal investigation had been launched.
