Greetings growers,

My last attempt to sprout a new strain of seeds was a disaster.
I was heart broken.
100% of them died!
I knew sprouting seeds is not that difficult as I have grown a big garden for 50 years.
I haven't sprouted seeds in a long time though... or I am just getting too old?
I was determined to succeed, so I bought more seeds {Sour Bubble}
and tried something entirely new...

'This time I followed the directions'!
I have a real good feeling about this attempt and will give a complete report.
They're in there 'soaking' and I have 'high hopes' for the second batch of seeds.

Thank you...

Eureka,

It's alive! It's alive!
I can see two, two... little, white tap roots peering out, the barely perceptible crack in the seed cases.
I had to have a magnifying glass to even see them, but at least two are alive!

I turned the A/C off and opened the windows.
67 hours was the time they took, soak - germinated.
The rest can't be far behind...

Thank you...

Update:
I'm happy to report that at 88 hours, all but two or three have sprouted!
There's no reason they won't all sprout.
It looks like all the help and best wish-'mojo's' have done their work.
Sour bubble is my new strain.
Wow...

You know Poet, I think sometimes ther are just bad batches of seeds. I had ordered some Sour Diesel CBD seeds last spring and not a ingle one of them sprouted, but all the other strains that I ordered did. So, IMHO, sometimes it is not anything that we have done wrong...sometimes seeds just don't sprout.

Congratulations on your new babies!

Fellow Growers,

Out of 26 seeds I managed to sprout one, Sour Bubble seedling...
I've grown tired and discouraged waiting for the rest to sprout.
They aren't going to do it.
I thought I saw white root material in the little crack in the seed.
Thought they were sprouting!
I haven't germinated seeds in ten years and must have done everything wrong.
Light on, rock wool, p/h 'too alkaline', in the cloner w too much water and the wrong kind off water as well.
Dern...

I have studied germinating for weeks and plan on buying another pkg. of seeds in November.
I'll germinate them just 2 or 3 seeds at a time, and use R.O water too.
I am discouraged but will keep trying.

In fact I just read a post "soaking seeds too long".
and it sounds like my problem. I must have drowned them.

But 'Bog' said to soak 24 hours?
Next time however I'll soak 5 minutes like suggested and plant them in soil.

Sorry ...

I’ve never soaked my seeds, Poet. I sprouted 7 for 7 using rockwool in the spring. I just soaked the rockwool in a couple gallons of water(no pHing) with a little EM1(not enough to change the pH I don’t think). Then I squeezed the cubes out well and put the seeds in the ready-made hole. I didn’t close the hole completely off as I read somewhere that seeds like a little air. I’ve germinated in the same soil I grow in a bunch of times too. I always keep the germinating seeds and media in a warm area like my furnace room. Keep trying and you will find a method that works for you.

Oldfogey8,

Thank you for your post.
Yes, I think I must have drowned them.
I'll try again next month as this months check is already spoken for.
I spent years learning how to clone.

Sprouting seeds, being necessary to growing,
I guess I am going to buy another pkg. and give it hell.

Thank you...

Fresh seeds do not need to be soaked. Not only is it unnecessary, but as you have found out, it can be detrimental. I am a big believer in just putting the seed into your medium or starter cube. So sorry you have had such problems with these.

My germination rate has been maybe 50/50 so I recently started just going right to the grow medium. Now I’m growing in coco chips so I germed in coir....they are very fragile at the sprout stage too. Good luck and keep it up...

Fellow Growers,

Luckily, I'll have enough money to order seeds tomorrow!

I need to learn how to germinate seeds.
I never really understood the soaking thing.
My germinating attempts have all been hit or miss.
One has to think like a plant, in order to understand what they are doing and how to help them.
I thought...
Starting seeds in 2 litter Hempy's with 'used' super soil. {not so hot}
Soak them 5 minutes in spring water.
Plant them one little finger nail deep, keep them in the dark and damp with spring water...?

That sounds like it may work, am I forgetting anything?

Thank you...

FYI-I once thought that putting my germinating seeds on top of my water heater was a good idea. I must have planted one of the seeds (a Buckeye Purple)too deep because it sprouted and grew towards the warmth(down instead of up). I now plant the seeds about the length of the seed deep so just under the soil but I am a little paranoid. Those Buckeye Purple seeds were like gold to me..,

You might want to pick up some seed starting mix or better yet, something like rapid rooters. Plants seldom use all the nutrients in the soil. I anticipate that even "used" super soil is way too hot for seeds. I also personally think that 2 liter containers are too large for seedlings. It is simply too hard to keep them the right amount of moist when they are in such a large container. No reason to soak them. Put them into the medium (not used super soil!), plant them about 1/4 to 1/2" deep and keep them warm. No reason to keep them in the dark.

Good Luck!

Goddess...

I was thinking about seed starter but changed my mind.
I'll get a 5lb bag to germinate seeds in.
And I have little plastic cups, 8-10 oz, holes in the bottom.
{Purple!}
{I feel much better now}
I'll keep the dirt and the water warm and use fluorescent lights.

Thanks for the insights...

I have one seedling...
and was thinking if it was a female,
I could grow it to about two feet tall and take 15-20 clones from it.
I would have the Sour Bubble strain.

Now one specimen would be somewhat lacking as a clone mother?
And a more complete genetic sample would to take 5-6 from different phenotypes?
My Satori has two phenotypes and my Oregon Grown OG one.
Does any body know how many phenotypes Sour Bubble has.
If they are basically alike... or pretty close.

I'll just manage this one seedling.
And save $70.

Shoot some Golf?
Aren't they some kind of Duck?
I don't like Duck.
