Today is the beginning of plant training. I found a method called “Quadlining” on another site, but I don’t think I’m allowed to link to other sites. I’m not sure if it is a widely recognized growing style, but it’s nothing too creative. It involves removing the bottom two nodes from the seedling and topping above the fourth node. That leaves you with four branches to be spread out and trained in a “plus sign” shape. Here are two photos from that web page that show the technique’s basics. In the first photo, you remove the branches from the bottom two circles (bottom 2 nodes). Second photo shows how you train the branches to grow using low stress training.

So to start this, I removed the bottom two nodes from each plant. I will top above the fourth node in a few more days. I don’t want to shock them by doing too much at once.

Today I’m closing out week #10 with the second Blue Dream. The first Blue Dream was ready for harvest at 8 weeks while this one is taking it’s sweet time. I plan to harvest in 48 hours. I don’t know if this 48 hours of darkness is “bro science” or legit, but I’m willing to wait.

I might chop and dry the entire plant as one unit this time. Even with using the drying tent at 60% humidity, the hanging branches dried out too fast. I’ll hang the plant at 60% humidity and see how quickly she dries.

Moving her into 48 hours of darkness and then I will harvest her under green lights as I’ve learned on this site.

Cleaning the grow tent today and getting her ready for the new plants.

Now I’m second guessing whether to harvest…..or whether to put her back under the lights for another week (week 11 of flower). Any opinions her are welcome! I’m not looking for a lot of amber. Thanks in advance for any input!

I would let it go a bit longer. I think you harvested one before Thanksgiving so you should have a bunch of bud to keep you buzzed. If you let this one go longer, you will be able to compare and contrast the benefits of early vs later harvests.

I had a sneaky suspicion that you’d say that OldFogey. Thank you for the response….I will hold off. I kept looking at the photo and questioning my rush.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! My EM-1 arrived and I’ve started using it on the seedlings as well as inoculating the soil in the 5 gallon fiber pots where they will be going in a week or two. Sounds like great stuff as I read more about it.

outstanding!

i will wager that your grow room smells divine!

say , was your Blue Dream from clone or seed?….

( apologies if you already posted the info )

Thanks. Turkey day was good. Got to hang out with my adult sons, wife and in-laws.

EM-1 is supposed to be good for a lot of stuff. They say it is a deodorizer but my wife got a bit pissed when I tried it and it turned out to be an odorizer instead. Stuff I don’t use within a month, I pour in my compost heap. Haven’t done a side by side but my compost breaks down pretty quickly since I started that. I have started giving it to my dungeon plants(called a dungeon because it is far from prime grow conditions)…

Hi Big…..I think I’m losing my sense of smell. But I think it’s stinking up the whole house because I can smell it after taking the dog outside and getting a break from the smell.

My Blue Dream was from Nirvana seeds.

Glad you had a great Turkey day! We ended up hosting 9 people and no one was sick from my cooking and no one smelled the harvest going on in the basement. So it was successful.

I smelled the EM-1 and there’s a unique smell when I mixed it into my feed. Not unpleasant….but but I’m not sure I’d want to use it around the house either. My wife would probably share your wife’s opinion…..and let me know it too. Lol

That’s a good idea to use the excess outdoors. I have a few plants in our clay soil that might benefit from EM1. I have a quart of it “fermenting” now with some molasses water to try to stretch my bottle out for a few months. Looks like it expires in July of next year, so EM1 appears to have a 6-7 month shelf life.

Thanks again for looking at my Trichomes. A few more days won’t hurt.

I will be interested to know how your EM brew goes. When I first started making it, the smell was identical to the bottle I bought. The bottle I bought in June smells normal but my brew smells a bit like cheese. I tried using a new bottle and carboy setup, all of which I cleaned really well, new filter on my water, new container of molasses, etc. Same smell. Maybe it is the bottle of EM-1??? Not sure. The plants like it though.

My EM brew still smells like molasses…don’t think any fermentation has taken place. I think I’ll place the jar on top of my hot water heater to warm the fluid up more tomorrow. I’ll let you know, but so far I’m not having much luck.

I ended up harvesting today after seeing enough amber for my liking. I’m not looking for a sedative effect. Here’s a few shots of the Trichomes today now that I’ve wrapped up the grow.

I put mine on top of the water heater as well. I forget what temp they recommend for fermentation but my house is always ‘cool’ and even though my water heater is pretty well insulated, it is still warmer than most areas of my house and it is usually dark. It takes about a week at minimum for my EM fermentation to get going.

It wouldn’t be a harvest without photos. Here’s the final photo showing the harvest, which is a little larger harvest than I achieved with the first Blue Dream. She benefitted from not being crowded in a SCROG net and having 3 more weeks of lighting. I didn’t save any sugar leaves….I’ll make edibles with the buds.

I was able to use only one hanging rack for Blue Dream #1. I needed two racks and the larger tent to dry out this plant. As soon as they’re dry, the small one gallon plants will be transplanted and moved to the 2x4 tent.

The young plants will now take over 100% of this Grow Diary.

Today they received a foliar feeding in the bathtub. I don’t like to Spray in the tent…..feel like it could mess up the LED lenses and require additional cleaning.

Last week, I removed the bottom two nodes. On Sunday, I topped above the fourth node. At this time, all growth hormones should be going to four branches. I notice some leaves drooping on the Purple Ghost Candy…can’t figure out if the pots are getting too small or if I’m overwatering. I don’t have room in the veg tent for 5-gallon pots with saucers. Leaves are hanging over the edges and they have been in one gallon containers for 11 days.

I will be following BigSur’s Lucas Formula recommendation…..but since my soil is so hot (Fox Farm OF), I won’t start dosing nutrients until flower unless I see a deficiency.

I checked the roots on the one gallon containers. I’ve always made the mistake of transplanting on the early side, but these look “ready” to me. Transplanted the two plants I intend to keep (purple ghost candy and Godfather OG) from one gallon containers to 5 gallon fiber pots.

I added Mykos based on Carty’s experience using this product in his grow journal. Watered in after transplant with RO water, seaweed extract and eM1. Forgot to ph my water….so it’s probably around a ph of 9. The soil should balance that out and forgive me for one mistake.

They’re planted in a mixture of Ocean Forest soil and perlite.

Now we wait for the 2x4 to open up.

On the effectiveness of EM1, one of my Christmas cacti flowered a month or so ago. All the blooms dropped. I had extra EM1 to use up do I dosed all my houseplants. The Christmas cactus is flowering again. I transplanted it into a bigger pot this summer so it has some relatively fresh soil but I thought they only flowered once a year.

Good Morning OldFogey! I wish I had more plants to test the EM-1 on. Im giving it to the cannabis plants with every feeding for now, and they seem healthy. Once we get into spring, I’ll use it outdoors too.

My batch is starting to smell like EM-1, but the ph is still a little high (4.0) and there’s still a sweet molasses smell. I think it needs a little more time.

Thanks again for turning me onto it.

Today I’m doing some low stress training associated with the “Quadlining” approach to plant training. I’ve already removed the bottom two nodes and topped above the fourth node…..so there are only four branches to train.

I’m really excited for these strains as well as this training technique. I liked the efficiency and canopy under my old SCROG, but I strongly prefer being able to remove the plants from the tent. I’ve also decided to only grow two plants. The third one will be culled.
