Transplanting help

When is a good time to transplant, when the roots are sticking out of the bottom or at a certain height?

I transplant when it starts to show signs of rootbinding.
couple of signs..
1. slowed growth
2. needs water almost everyday
After transplanting I give it some B1..like superthrive or thrivealive.
Seems to really help for me. I get a faster recoup rate.
