A 400 watt HPS will cover a 4x4 area with the minimum amount to lumens.

3,000 lumens per/sq ft of area.

4x4 is 16 sq ft.

A 400 puts out about 50,000 lumens

50,000 divided by 3,000 is 16.66

Easy math.

The number all depends on how long you veg... You could do 16 in a SOG and veg for say a week or 1 huge tree that you veg for 3 months... It all depends on you..

hey jibba, rule of thumb is 50w/sq ft. so roughly just under 3ft x 3ft. you can definately do what you are after. also when introducing light to plants start of with nice distance maybe 30", but w/o a cool tube you will be looking to gradually working it down to 16"-20" above canopy. your buds might come out little less dense than if it were grown in 9 sq ft.

And id say stay with a 10 sq foot area max.. If you want to cover 16 sq foot "4x4" area i would use a 600W..

And 3,000 lumen's per sq foot is min requirements.. I would go with at least 5,000 lumen's per sq foot or moor...
