Police confiscated plants with an estimated street value of £150,000 when they closed down a Crewe cannabis factory.

More than 1,000 plants were found when officers raided the former Golden Pacific Oriental Restaurant on Friday.

The production unit was discovered when electricity company engineers went into the building to cut off the power supply under the terms of a court warrant.

Police immediately sealed off the premises on Chester Bridge.

Detective Inspector Iain Goodwin said: “This appears to have been an organised production set up similar to several others which have been found in Cheshire. The building contained a full hydroponics system to irrigate the plants and overhead heaters.

“Mature plants were on the ground floor and young ones upstairs. All the windows had been obscured with polythene sheeting."

He said the restaurant closed several months ago and indications are that the cannabis production had been going on for some time.

“This type of production has increased dramatically over the past few years,” said DI Goodwin.

Police raided the premises at approximately 9am.

Six rooms were full of cannabis plants which were removed by a specialist company and destroyed under regulated conditions.
