can you use garden lime in soil after a plant is already in the pot? i am using 5 gal buckets and am having a low ph issue and was wondering if i could mix pulverized garden lime with the surface of the medium in my containers and then water them to stabilize the ph in my containers?

are phenol red test kits still accurate on water after the water has passed through the soil and discolored the water to start with? wouldn't that throw off the reading on the chart since the test is meant to be done on clear water? sorry i didnt know where else to ask this?
