Brazil's top court says that demonstrations favoring the legalization of marijuana can be held in Latin America's biggest country.

The Supreme Court's eight justices ruled Wednesday night that such demonstrations are an exercise of free expression and do not encourage people to consume marijuana.

The judges said the ruling applies only to pro-legalization demonstrations and does not mean that the use of marijuana has been authorized.

The ruling came two weeks after police fired tear gas to break up a Marijuana March in the city of Sao Paulo.
