Trying to convey the message that marijuana is safer than alcohol, proponents of a ballot initiative to legalize the recreational use of pot in Colorado unveiled their first billboard Thursday.
The billboard, located at 1660 Federal Boulevard and directly across from Sports Authority Field at Mile High, shows a woman stating For many reasons, I prefer marijuana over alcohol. Does that make me a bad person?
Notably lacking from the sign is any marijuana imagery, or even the color green.
Every day, hundreds of thousands of Colorado adults make decisions about whether to use marijuana or alcohol, said Betty Aldworth, advocacy director for the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol. We are not suggesting that one is better than the other, but we are asserting that marijuana is objectively less harmful than alcohol.
Amendment 64 seeks to legalize the recreational use of marijuana by adults over the age of 21. The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes was approved by Colorado voters in 2000.
According to spokesperson Mason Tvert, the campaign is mobilizing an army of volunteers across the state to begin distributing corresponding flyers to voters in their communities.
Opponents of the amendment have not yet organized a No campaign.
