BENTONVILLE - Police seized 4.5 pounds of marijuana from a package scheduled for delivery Tuesday in Bentonville.

Michael Lee Prather, 35, of 705 Durham Place was arrested at his home in connection with felony possession with intent to deliver marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Bentonville police.

A police dog detected the drug inside what Federal Express representatives considered a "suspicious package."

With a search warrant, police confirmed the package contained marijuana, said Special Agent Ken Whillock, a narcotics investigator of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division.

Bentonville police called the state to help with the investigation.

This is the second case in two weeks of police investigating a controlled substance in a scheduled package delivery at a residence.

On Feb. 12, police seized approximately 22.5 pounds of marijuana after delivering a Federal Express package they believed contained a significant amount of marijuana to 915 S. 25th Place in Rogers.

"The first time I got a call from a drug task force group, and they let us know about there being possibly a package arriving in Bentonville," Whillock said.

The mailing of drugs is common, and police rely on tips and reports to catch the packages in transit, Whillock said.

Rogers police helped Bentonville officers in arresting James Tavipet Pounthaheangsy and Alexxis Antonio Cruz, both 20 of Rogers, in connection with felony intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Police are withholding the names of three 17-year-old juveniles arrested in connection with the incident until the Benton County prosecuting attorney's office determines whether to charge them as adults.

Bentonville Lt. Jon Simpson said the two crimes are not related.

"There wasn't any distinct similarities in packaging and nothing that would say absolutely this was the same deal," he said.

However, "We believe both packages came from the lower part of Texas," he said.
