Two Forest Ranch marijuana gardens raided by the Butte County Sheriff's Office Marijuana Unit Thursday turned up more than $34 million worth of marijuana plants, authorities said.
With assistance from the Butte Interagency Narcotics Task Force, law enforcement officials located the gardens during reconnaissance flights earlier this year.
The first garden was located near Big Chico Creek above Garland Road, where deputies discovered two tents in conjunction with the marijuana garden, according to a Butte County Sheriff's Office press release issued by Sgt. Steve Collins.
A number of suspects fled from law enforcement officials upon their arrival, and though deputies attempted to apprehend the suspects, the search was terminated after an hour.
Officers confiscated from the garden 6,041 plants, which carry an estimated street value of $24,164,000. The plants were reportedly near harvest and had a large amount of buds on them, Collins reported.
The second garden, discovered near Little Chico Creek off of Cabernet Way, yielded an estimated value of $10,308,000 worth of plants, with 2,577 plants recovered from the site. Deputies did not locate any tents or potential suspects at the garden.
No weapons were found at either garden.
Both gardens were watered by gravity feed watering systems, and each covered approximately three or four acres.
Trash reportedly littered the area surrounding both gardens, and the press release notes that the natural vegetation near both gardens had been cleared, making the area susceptible to erosion.
The two gardens compound "current trends" in the area, with local officials witnessing an increase in "the size and number of marijuana gardens" in Butte County, the release cites.
The marijuana unit has reportedly fielded numerous calls from concerned residents recently and are actively investigating a number of marijuana garden reports.
