I currently have a 250W digital ballast HPS grow light, I want to get a MH bulb to use for my veg cycle. In looking into this, I see that the 250 watt is a bit harder to find than the more common four or six hundred watters. I found one and was about to purchase it, but I stopped when I read that it "requires and enclosed fixture" Does anybody have any experience with this? If I use it in an open fixture like I have will bad things happen? Can anyone suggest a MH conversion bulb in this wattage?

The link is below:

how bout this link? It has more lumen output and a higher color spectrum. But this one says you need to have a glass lens. I don't really get what an enclosed lamp would offer as far as advantages? It gets hotter, and less lumens reach your plant. Is there any valid reason a universally burning bulb would have to have a glass lens?

Ataraxia, check your ballast to see if you need a conversion bulb. I have a 400w digital that says I don't need one, but it came with one. I just bought 2 HPS and MH bulbs from Plantlightinghydroponics. My ballast lite the MH with no problem. I think the worst that will happen is it will shorten the bulbs life, not sure by how much though. If you get the regular MH bulb, make sure your reflector is big enough, my bulb is the size of a Mini Football! I think the lens is just in case the bulb explodes. Hope this helps you out.
