An 18-year-old man died after he and another man tried to rob a marijuana grower in his Port Vue home late Thursday night, touching off a shootout, Allegheny County police said this morning.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the dead man as George Langley, of McKeesport. He was pronounced dead at UPMC McKeesport.

Police said Mr. Langley and a 24-year-old man went to a house in the 700 block of Liberty Way about 11:30 p.m. and went inside.
One had a gun.

The 62-year-old resident also was armed with a handgun and "a physical altercation was followed by an exchange of gunfire," Lt. Andrew Schurman wrote in a news release.

The 24-year-old was stuck in the arm. The resident suffered a graze wound to the head and was treated and released from a hospital.
The suspects, both from McKeesport, left in a vehicle that was waiting for them on Glenn Street at the end of the block, police said.

A female driver, who could face charges, took them to her home in Port Vue and then to UPMC McKeesport, Port Vue police Lt. David Petruski said.

From there, the 24-year-old was transported to UPMC Presbyterian, he said.

Lt. Petruski declined to release their names.

Lt. Schurman said he expects the 24-year-old will be charged with crimes stemming from the robbery.

Lt. Schurman did not identify the resident, but said he will be charged in connection to the marijuana growing operation, which remains under probe by county narcotics detectives. The release did not mention anything about charges in the shooting death.

Allegheny County property record available online identify the house's owners as John R. and Dorothy L. Zyskowski.

Speaking of Mr. Zyskowski, Lt. Petruski said "we have never had any type of criminal dealings with him. It came as a shock to us when we found out he was involved."

Police removed from his basement four "very large" marijuana plants, several handguns and several long guns, Lt. Petruski said. They were bagged as evidence, so police aren't sure whether Mr. Zyskowski possessed the handguns legally.

The large amount of marijuana suggested it was not for personal use, he said.

Neighbors said Mr. Zyskowski kept to himself and they had no problems with him. Nor did they have an inkling that there was marijuana growing.
"He is very helpful to everybody," one neighbor, Margaret Hoffman, said. "He's very very sweet."

Another neighbor said she heard what sounded like firecrackers late Thursday and realized they were gunshots when police arrived with yellow tape.
