Oregon marijuana is now safer to consume than any food product, testing lab says

Laboratories that test recreational marijuana for potency and purity in Oregon say legal pot is now more rigorously tested and safer to consume than any consumer food product in the state, NBC affiliate station KGW in Portland reports.

New third-party testing requirements for recreational marijuana sold legally in the state went into effect October 1, the same day Oregon’s Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) took charge of the state’s recreational marijuana market.

“There’s a lot of people who have never consumed cannabis and now that it’s legal, they want to try it for different reasons, and they need to know what they’re consuming,” Molly Lyons, a scientist at GreenHaus Analytical Labs in Southeast Portland, told KGW.

GreenHaus Analytical Labs tests samples from marijuana harvests, as well as oil and concentrates, for pesticides, mold and potency. Pesticides are the most common contaminant, with about 25 to 30 percent of all samples failing for pesticides, Lyons said.

All marijuana and marijuana products must pass testing before being transferred to retail dispensaries in Oregon.

“If you can’t sell your product, that’s a big motivator to find a new product that is safe and possibly organic so you can pass your test and have your product on the shelf,” Lyons said. “I could only wish our food was tested to the highest standards as cannabis.”

Marijuana labs in Oregon must obtain state accreditation, have proper land use approval from local government officials and pass an OLCC security inspection before starting operations.

State accreditation has become somewhat of an issue, however. Oregon Health Authority officials have said the agency lacks necessary resources and staff to take on the time-consuming tasks of inspecting marijuana labs and ensuring lab employees conduct proper testing, as reported by The Register-Guard.

As of mid-September 2016, 37 labs had applied for state accreditation. Only a handful have received it, however. The current accreditation process takes several months, according to the Oregon Health Authority website.
